Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hip Dislocation

What experience does anyone have of hip dislocation?

Vet explained that rabbit hips are different to other animals and to leave it to heal, but she can still run about as normal.

Is it me, or does that sound odd?

Our rabbit dislocated his hip 6 years ago. He was put on cage rest for 6 weeks in a 3ft cage. We then built up exercise gradually. It healed well and bunny is now 11 years old and had no further problems :)

Is the vet a rabbit specialist?

My Mini dislocated her hip. The vets I went to at the time had never experienced it before and had to get in contact with a specialist. They did an op on her hip as it wouldn't go back into place on it's own and they basically broke the hip joint and let it heal itself and form a new joint. Apparently it's very similar to what they do in cats.

She's fine now with no major lasting issues, sometimes in winter she looks a little uncomfortable and she gets some metacam for a while. But in general she's absolutely fine.

Bella dislocated her hip when she was 6 months old. She couldn't use her leg at all and was in a lot of pain :(

Our vet wasn't rabbit savvy and had no idea what to do. Talked to a specialist apparently who said to leave it and restrict her space for a few weeks, so that's what we did. She also had Metacam twice a day. Believe it or not but it actually did heal by itself, no operation was ever needed and she hasn't had any problems with her leg since.

I'm tempted to keep her in, but she'll probably go mental trying to bust out of a 3ft cage and injure herself even more! I might just keep the catflap closed for a bit so she can only hop on the flat.

Pesky bunwabs.

A rabbit I know had a similar experience and is all good again. I think it depends on the degree of displacement and the strength of the surrounding soft tissues.
My bunny pal had the option of surgery if he didn't rehab well enough but all went well with R&R & Metacam for a while.

Yes this is a good point. Mini's was out for at least two weeks before the op. They thought it was a sprain to begin with. It just wasn't going to sort itself though she still managed to jump on my bed with only one leg   (she'd slipped out when Mischa got his exercise time).

I have let her run free...she's eating and scampering about, so I guess she's not in any pain. Her leg has set at a funny angle, but if it doesn't bother her, why change it?
