  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

One ear suddenly down/lop/flopping?

Alpha Buck
One of Pepe's ears has suddenly started flopping over to the side this afternoon, he normally has two upright ears. Having googled it seems it could be the start of an ear infection. Could it be anything else? He's about 7 months old and I don't know his parentage.

He seems well in himself and is behaving normally, but is he likely to be ok until tomorrow evening to see the vet? It's just that I have a newborn baby and a toddler and before then ill have to take them to the vets with me, but my husband will be home tomorrow afternoon. Obviously if he should be seen before then or he starts seeming ill I'd just manage to go before tomorrow night.

Thanks.

Can you have a look in and smell of his ear ?

Does the ear feel unusually warm and/or is he sensitive to being touched there ?

If he is well in every other way and there are no signs of his head tilting or of him being wobbly on his feet then he should be OK until tomorrow.

Is he an Indoor Rabbit ? If so and you have turned your central heating up the increased atmospheric temperature may cause his ear to Lop

Thank you. I've given him a good check over and he seems fine. The ear doesn't seem sore and there's no obvious swelling and no fluid coming out of his ear or anything. He's his perfectly normal self and the bunnies were both doing their usual excited circling when I went out to feed them (outdoor buns) and also did their usual 'dashing out to steal some pellets out of the tub' while I was doing their hay etc.

I'll keep a close eye on him and take him to the vet tomorrow if things stay the same.

Thanks again!
