  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I've asked around for you, but no-one has heard any praises for vets in the vicinity.

I'd suggest that you give some a call and ask them how many rabbits they treat, have they performed many neuters on bucks and does, what are their views on pain relief for rabbits, do they recommend vaccinations, how do they deal with gut stasis etc.

See what you think to their responses and check back and let us know. Good luck :)

ETA ... someone said they go to a vets in Witham, but not all the vets are bunny savvy.

My friend uses this vet for her bunnies. They were brilliant with her when she ended up losing her bunny to kidney failure. He had countless trips to them, stays overnight and tests and she could not fault their care for him.

They are also the building which is used by vetsnow for out of hours service. I don't know if they have the same vets there all the time, but when I had to bring Luna there bank holiday weekend with severe respiratory distress they were amazing. Really supportive, knowledgable and just really nice, which was what I needed. I ended up having her pts as she got progressively worse and they could not do any more for her, but I honestly think that they did all they could, and they didn't make me feel like an idiot for sobbing uncontrollably over a rabbit (which I have experienced with other vets more local to me).

I'm the wrong part of Essex to be much use but William Lewis at Orchid Vets in Brentwood is excellent - that may be a little too far out for you too though. We have some members that live a little closer to you so they may hopefully be able to recommend someone. :D

If you decide to give a few local vets a call, there are some questions here that may help you to decide whether they seem rabbit savvy. http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?267127-How-to-find-a-good-rabbit-vet
