  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Something that resembles a Myxi lump?

Hi, sorry to post 2 threads in health in the same day, but I've just noticed this lump on Theodor's mouth, he was vaccinated about 22 days ago and has been neutered since. Looking at other photo's the lump wasn't there to begin with. He's got absolutely no other signs, his genitals aren't swollen, his eyes are clear, just this perplexing lump. I got a few photo's. He was being particularly difficult to photograph from other angles and still won't allow the OH to hold him for any better shots.

As Jacks-Jane said, particularly if it gets darker I would say it could be a nodule. It could be a reaction to the vaccine, but ask whilst at the vets if there have been any local reports of myxo, because then it would be worth treating on the off chance that it isn't a reaction.

A couple of threads like this today reminding me how horrible it was earlier this year :(

I'll be definitely calling them Monday morning, thank you for the advice guys. It's highly appreciated!

I'm furious. I really am, it wasn't my usual vet it was the "small animal vet" I seen today some 20something year old. Due to the urgency of the matter I had to see him. Firstly upon examining him he peels the "myxo lump" off him, begins squeezing the area and feeling other places, he then doesn't identify that he's hurt and upset by the chattering and thinks he's happy. He then tells me he doesn't want to put him down just yet. (I nearly jawed him I swear) One tiny lump on a vaccinated rabbit then goes on to tell me the prognosis with myxo catching is a little chance of survival (He's vaccinated and he knows this!!) Not to mention from what i've read if it's nodular myxo it's one of the milder forms and easier to treat. He wants to see him back tomorrow at 6PM I honestly am starting to think I may need a rabbit specialist vet. Just the whole problems with Domino earlier this year and now this. They're absolutely fine with rats, but most of the time if I end up with an unclued vet I have to self diagnose and treat via asking for the correct meds and the likes. :\

He's also not formed any new lumps at this time. Is it a chance he's just been nibbled by his mate and caused a strange scab?

Either way I got Queenie vaccinated during all of this and she was quite good around the other two surprisingly.

Wow, dump him! Is there no one at the practice that's a bit more experienced with rabbits? I would see if you can rebook with a different vet - you are paying for this advice remember! If it was certain it was myxi you could just go in and demand ab's/painkiller but as it's not clear either way you really want a vet that knows what they are doing to do some diagnosis - yes it could be a weird scab.

If it is myxi, it's nodular - because there is a nodule and no other myxi symptoms, and as you quite rightly say he's vaccinated so the prognosis is actually very good.

If he's the only one maybe you could print him some info and drop it in for him to brush up on before seeing you. Here is some from the Rabbit Welfare Association: http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/resources/content/info-sheets/understanding_myxo_feb06.htm

I only just read this last night, I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't remember. When he vaccinated our doe today he didn't do the intradermal part or when these two was vaccinated I don't believe they had it done intradermally either. Theres still not a sign of anything on the buck, I was considering seeing if I could reschedule on Thursday as I know my usual vet isn't in on Wednesday. I'm still wondering if it could be risky for him or not but he's had this scab since saturday or sunday and no other symptoms that have appeared.

I could be wrong but I'm not sure if the new vaccine needs the intradermal bit, I don't remember my vet doing it, he usually does that bit in the ear so it's obvious.

Ah ok thank you, i'll do a bit of research and see if I can find out. I guess you may not need to (logically) with VHD.

Can't seem to find anything on it.

I went to cancel the appointment and kind of put my foot in it, it's with my usual vet and I wasn't aware.

Back from the vets and seen my usual vet. He said he'll be perfectly fine he'd contracted but fought it off. Not quite sure what to make of that but there has been 0 symptoms of anything else otherwise.

hi my buns have just been diagnosed with cutaneous myxi which is basically what your bunny looks like he might have. very similar crusty type lumps, please don't rule that out as an option and just keep a very close eye on him. mine have just been given some anti inflammatory, antibiotics and also a cream to soothe the scabs. hoping that they get better soon and hoping ur little bun does too! :) please read my thread if you want more info x
