I've kept the sand area the same, just replaced the sand with new, and discovered he's been weeing in the corner behind the wheel that is really difficult to get to

The main change is the wooden platform I've got over his tree house bed!

I got this bottle holder from eBay ages ago, it's brilliant for aquarium type cages :thumb:

It's not exactly the changes I planned but I spent a small fortune today  May add/change some more things further down the line. I'm pleased how the lid turned out though, it was really simple and fits perfectly. If anyone's interested in how I made it let me know and I'll do instructions!! :D

Butterscotch is well jel!

Just a quick hamster q... how long do you give him in the bath for runaround time?? THanks!

I've been doing about 30 mins every other day, is this enough? too much?

It's looking fantastic! I love my detolf and can't get over how much fun we have watching my sons hamster in it. She's not impressed when we visit our parents because we have a smaller plastic home for travelling and she misses all her space.

That's fantastic. I'd love one of those for the gerbils but they'd eat their way out of the ends

To be honest Grayson doesn't get that much out of cage time, mainly because he's never awake when I am! But I don't worry about it as he has such a large cage. Occasionally he'll wake up and 'ask' to come out so he comes out for cuddles and a bit of an explore. I'd say what you're doing sounds fine if it fits in with yours and your hamsters schedules!!

There isn't really anywhere they could get a grip I don't think... Grayson has chewed away a bit at the slats on the lid (before I changed it) but other than that he hasn't chewed any of the cage

Hmm, gerbils are really bad for chewing though, my 2 are in a 4ft glass tank with a lid like your mesh one. I've never used one of those plastic cages with the modular tunnels (I don't like them) but gerbils apparently chew through those  if I got a detolf and converted it and then ate their way out they would be loose in the house and I have a cat who is an expert mouser

Haha yeah maybe not risk it then

I could use some of the things you have used as furniture though, it would give them something to chew on other than cardboard boxes and sticks  where did you get his tree house bed from?

It's from pets at home, it's actually a bird box but I've checked and birch is safe. Luckily Grayson doesn't really chew much but he does have plenty to chew should he decide! One of his play stick bridges was a bit chewed and the lid like I said but I think that's just when he wants to come out but I'm not there! Up til now at least he hasn't chewed anything like the wheel (prob spoke too soon now )

Ahh, I thought it looked like a bird box :thumb: I love finding stuff and having an ingenious idea to use them for something different :D

I saw it in someone else's detolf cage online and as I was trying to go for a natural look I thought it would be perfect! I've caved in a bit and got him a few toys and things now but I suppose it's all trial and error with pets isn't it, u don't know what works til u try! I had a full section filled with digging substrate at first but he slept in it, weed right at the bottom aswell as storing his food at the bottom  it just wasn't practical to keep clean :(

Love it.

I can't begin to imagine the amount of substrate you'd need to fill it for gerbils!

I would love one of those for Harvest but with postage it comes out at 70.00 which isnt possible atm... Love what you have done. Lucky Grayson!
