Anyone Use The 'Cat & Rabbit Clinic', Northampton?

sonnet

Alpha Buck
Have you used or know anyone that has used the 'Cat & Rabbit Clinic' in Northampton? If so, would you recommend them for further diagnostics/a second opinion for a rabbit? Honest opinions please.

Yes, I use them, as does RNGP Welfare and The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary for piggies. I can highly, highly recommend both Simon Maddock and his wife, Kim. Simon is a well known and respected bunny specialist and is the only vet I know who has successfully spayed hundreds of female guniea pigs. I trust his judgement 100% and he's got my bunnies through some horrible illnesses - even taking them home with him to continue their care :thumb:.

Tracy at the RNGP uses them all the time, apparently they are brilliant, they are very caring and do everything they can for bunnies, I think someone on here uses them to,could be Mackers?

Thank you for your replies. I have bit the bullet & just emailed them to enquire if I have to be referred via my usual vet or whether I can go straight to them & give them consent to obtain his notes as I haven't a clue!

I don't really want to stop using my usual vets in an emergency as they always see him straight away & are just down the road.

However I have made myself sick this week with stress & frustration that they think doing more diagnostics aside from the blood tests (which are normal) is (quote)
' probably a waste of time as I doubt we'll find anything & beside I wouldn't know where to start'...

Sooooo frustrating! Meantime he's being poorly every couple of months & they can't give me a diagnosis! I don't want to let Dylan down & I'm fed up of being fobbed off that it's just (quote)
' one of his episodes' but with no reasoning.
I desperately need another opinion from someone as I'm frightened he's not going to make it for much longer otherwise :cry:

I think you're perfectly entitled to go to any vet you wish but it is ethical to inform your current vet of your intentions, especially as a new vet will request a copy of your notes from them.

yes this, you can get a second opinion but you need to inform your current vet especially if you want to keep using them in the future. They shouldn't have a problem with it they feel they can't offer anything else themselves

I notice that the Cat & Rabbit clinic uses 'Vets Now' for out of hours care - should i be a concerned about this as I have no experience of Vets who don't have 24hr care on their own premises?
I'd need total trust if leaving him overnight with this service as I've never heard of them before?

That's reassuring as I don't want to upset them but at the same time want to get another opinion!

I used them to have Ellie's abcess removed and her teeth doing. It was very expensive, but the antibiotics worked well and even though it did look like Simon had tried to decapitate her, the abcess has gone and she's been much better since.

You are very lucky to have a vet that offers there own emergency vet cover. They are very few and far between. I think most vets now use vets now. We are lucky that our vets now are excellent but i have no experience of the northampton one x

I didnt realise so many vets use other vets for out of hours.... I have never had a vet do this....
Whatever time I phone my vets.... i get my vets...

Simon at The C and R Clinic got my rabbit through a horrendous ear infection earlier in the year which another vet had been treating for 5 months. He was better in 4 weeks with Simons help. They are now my vets with a more local vet for dire emergencies(not my original one needless to say!)

Yes, this is a pain in the butt :censored: but the Cat and Rabbit vets are just a husband and wife team, Simon and Kim. They also have small children so it would be a big ask to expect them to offer their own out of hours care, however much I'd be prepared to pay for them to do that.

However, when Pea had horrendous bloat, Simon took her home with him overnight rather than leave her either unattended or passed to Vets Now (as you have to use the Northampton PDSA clinic). My experience of the Northampton Vets Now wasn't good so if I ever need out of hours care for the bunnies now, I take them straight to the Vets Now team who operate out of the Veterinary Hospital in Milton Keynes (who also happen to be my dog vets). Vets Now don't have a problem with this and I've had reasonable care from them.
