  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please poopy bum

I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice. My rabbit ludo has a dirty bottom and has had for a couple of weeks. I clean him everyday but it's not getting better. Have seen the vets who have said he is healthy and can't find anything wrong. He is on a hay only diet at the moment and has been for 2 weeks because of this as the vet thought maybe it could be the pellets/greens causing it. His poos are moist and irregular shaped and as he does not use the litter tray is then standing in them and getting covered.
Gonna try vet again but was wondering if anyone here might have any ideas.

Does he have any mobility problems ?

Is he maintaining his weight ?

Is he drinking a lot ?

How old is he ?

Does he have any history of health problems ?

What accommodation does he live in ?

Sorry for all the questions !!

Hi yes he does maintain his weight ok, he is about 10 months old no mobility probs or illnesses. He's an outdoor bun in a soluble hutch and a runaround system and run and I don't think he drinks more than his friend x

Is there no solid/normal droppings at all?

Do you consider your vet rabbit savvy? Has the vet checked his teeth (front and back)?

Hi there are not really any 'normal' droppings although he has never produced the perfect golden ones like his friend does. Some are round but very moist and a dark colour others can be like a little sausage shape others are like a little cow pat but I'm sure this is because he has trodden in them.
I'm now questioning how savvy the vet is I thought they were fab before and have good reviews. The only other one here ive been told is not as good but this was for other pets not necessarily rabbits, maybe worth a trip anyway for a second opinion. Vet said teeth were ok when checked about 4 weeks ago

Did the vet happen to do a fecal test to check for parasites/bacteria? It's unusual for a hay only diet to not clear up mushy poop if it is only diet related. What type of hay is he getting? Have you checked his hay to make sure that there is no mold, or that there aren't any weeds in it that could be causing this? Is hay the only food he is getting right now, no fresh grass or anything else?
