  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbits dying

Millygdy

New Kit
Hi we got 6 baby bunnies 2 weeks ago aged between 10-14 weeks two sets of 3 siblings.
One died within a couple of days no syptoms then the next one died a week later it had a bloated tummy and was grinding its teeth. Then three more came down with diarrhea and jelly from their bottoms one died yesterday and two are just about holding on.
I have one seemingly healthy bunny who's two sisters were the first to die and yet she's been fine the whole way through. I moved her today into the playhouse my husbands converted and noticed lots of cecal droppings and no normal droppings I am petrified now she's getting the diarrhea too.
The vet just have me recovery medicine and fibreplex for the others.
Do you think this one will be ok or is she getting whatever the other bunnies had?

I'm not an expert but it sounds like coccidiosis. I'm not sure what the treatment should be but what you have doesn't sound like enough, are you certain your vet is rabbit savvy? I would post a thread in Rabbit Chat asking for a rabbit savvy vet in your area. Hopefully someone will be along soon who knows more, but I would have expected the vet to take samples from the unwell buns as well.

If I were you I would got to a different vet. That sounds like coccidiosis, which as you have found out can be very very nasty and infectious. It sounds like they need intensive treatment and that your vet is out of his depth.

Rabbits are actually classed as exotic pets and a lot of vets simply don't have the knowledge to treat them competently. If you tell us what area you live in we might be able to point you in the direction of a bunny savvy vet.

So very sorry to hear about your losses and lots of vibes to the poorly ones.

Im not very knowledgable on this stuff so I cant comment on what the problem could be but just wanted to say how sorry I am that you have lost them  hope your other 2 hang on in there and your other little one stays healthy x

That is coccidiosios we fostered 8 babies and 6 of them had it and we lost two to it and one of them had it twice . It's awful and they need to be on treatment straight away and you need to sterilise everything including your clothes. They end up so dehydrated due to the diarrhea and the bloated tummy is one of the signs. We had this in August and we worked wrong the clock to save the others it was hard work but we did it. The meds the vet has given you are no good at all for treatment of Coccidiosis I'm afraid.

Thankyou for all your replies . This vet is the recommended one for rabbits shes the specialist the only other thing she picked up on was a low temperature of 37.3

Sorry I'm remembering things as I go along after the initial diarrhea they seem to stop producing any droppings at all and go off food although one of mine is still eating grass, hay if I put it in

I still think you need a second opinion I'm afraid, a bunny that is not eating should be on pain relief and a gut motility drug at the very least.

Also you say they eat hay if you put it in? A rabbit should have access to unlimited hay, it's a very important part of their diet, even if they have access to grass 24/7 most runs would not give them access to the amount of grass they would need daily.

They have access to hay all day it's in their hutch but she only seems to eat it if I put hay and grass through the wire on the door.
She's the only one who's carried on eating and she's also lasted the longest although she seems underweight now she got diarrhea on Thursday. The others have all refused food and died quite quickly.
They were given fibreplex to get their gut moving.
I will contact the vet again and suggest what you've all said and see what she thinks.

As for my fingers crossed healthy bunny do you think all these cecal droppings are ok?

Whereabouts are you. We may be able to suggest somrone for a 2nd opinion. None pf the medicines you have listed would tackle coccidiosis or indeed all of the syptoms you list

I'm in braintree essex. The vets is millenium way veterinary practice

I have posted a new thread asking for recommended vets in the area. I know you did say your vet was the rabbity one but you have not had nearly enough medicines for these little ones. They should have had much more support and probably been kept in the vets with constant drip fluids and meds on-going.

If you can get to Cambridge, Jill Pearson is an exotics specialist.

www.cambridgevetgroup.co.uk

I know it's an hour's drive from you but it might be worth it to see someone who knows what they're talking about.

There are now several people there who specialise in rabbits - but Jill Pearson or Ian Cope are best in terms of long term experience - Ian has just joined and is in every day

I don't think the vets that way are all that great for bunnies sadly, although next year a new companion care is opening in Braintree and they will be great (it's my current vet).

Melinda Lewis at spring lodge in witham has experience of cocci, also Kat there is very good but I think she is off sick. I wouldn't recommend any of the others though.

I saw a specialist who told me Doughnut was fine after having her in for 3 days, she still came back to me a very sick bunny. After numerous vets I then found a brilliant specialist in Maidstone who told me she was a sick bunny and has helped her so much.

Sadly not even specialists are always right, it's best to get a second opinion as you may save your bunnies.

Just to say I agree totally with this. We are not blessed with good vets round these parts. And there are no rabbit specialists here. I have seen Melinda Lewis before, and also the vet that Santa mentioned who will be starting up Companion Care in Braintree in the spring.

 from another local. Best of luck x
