Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Hind Leg Weakness

Hi,

I have a 12 year old Neth Dwarf and he has hind leg weakness, all the vet has given me is Metacam he is still eating but requires constant baths to keep clean any suggestions I could put to the vet.

I want to give him a chance over the next few days

Thanks in advance

Was it a sudden onset or did it develop over a period of time ?

I am assuming your Vet suspects spinal arthritis to be the cause ?

If so has acupuncture and physiotherapy been suggested ?

Thanks Jane

He was getting more unsteady over the last few weeks I put it down to old age, I know how he must feel. I have just gone and got some Lapizole to give him a course to see if that makes any difference.

I'm afraid they have not suggested anything else, how far do you think I should go considering his age and where would I go for physio or acupuncture.

Thanks for your help not sure what to do next

Some Vets offer acupuncture as a complimentary treatment. As to whether it would be suitable for your old chap depends on how OK he is about 'hands on' care. Some Rabbits are fine with it, some find it all far too stressful so it is counter-productive. Physio can help reduce muscle wastage, which usually occurs in cases of spinal arthritis. Also, the bun may not fully empty their bladder so over time they get a build up of bladder sludge. This can cause urinary incontinence and cystitis. So it is useful to have the Vet show you how to gently examine Bun's bladder. Sometimes manual bladder expression is needed to prevent sludge build up.
