Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

clipping nails

Young Bun
I've noticed over the past few days that Freddie's nails are becoming a bit long so I think they need a trim. I haven't had him for very long so this hasn't been an issue before but the problem is he HATES being picked up in any way, he'll panic, kick and wriggle to no end! So I'm really not sure how to approach this. He also has dark nails so it'll be difficult to find how much to cut off... I'd probably try a couple of millimetres and see how that goes.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to deal with this problem? I've heard of trancing but I don't want to do that to him as I think it's quite a cruel thing to do!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated :)

Bunny burrito is a popular method! Personally I put a blanket on a table, put bunny on table (so it's a bit like a vets table) and then stand behind them, lean right over and gently pick up each paw. As long as there are plenty of treats and nose rubs my two are normally very happy with this and leaning in close seems to make them feel safe but without them being in my lap (which they hate).

I bunny burrito! :D Well, with Donny and Lola anyway (unless they're going for a vet check up, then they have them done there) as they are massive pains in the bum. My bf is a pro with those 2, I just can't keep hold of them even when they're wrapped up!

The others just it there and take it, especially Kerbie! I think he enjoys a pampering:lol:

It's the other way round for me and Andrew, he doesn't hold them firmly enough so they just get away, whereas I can keep hold even when they're wriggling. It's easy at first to worry about hurting them, but they're more likely if they can wriggle too much

I have to my boys soon and I'm dreading it as it stresses Bilbo out so much that I can do the second set of nails with him just laying on my lap :(
