  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Need immediate help. *PLEASE*

My rabbit is about 4 months old. Male.
In the recent couple of weeks, there has been a huge oval swelling on the inner surface of my rabbits ear.

the dark brown part is the swelling.

Hi, unfortunately the forum is down and only a few people are able to get on because of the tapatalk app so you probably won't get replies until it's back up and running.

My advice is take him to the vets asap though.

This sounds like one of two things:

1. an infection - has there been a cut or scratch on the area at all?

2. a possible strange myxi reaction- is bunny vaccinated? Have you checked to see if eye or genitals swollen?

It could be an infection, and the swelling is pus under the skin, or it could be cauliflower ear type issue (though it's not common in rabbits) - where the ear has been damaged and blood/fluid has built up under the skin and due to the nature of ears doesn't drain away. In either case, the vet will probably drain it and give some antibiotics, if it is cauliflower ear I think they sometimes add some stitches to keep the ear layers together.
