Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

jaw abscess

Dear all,
Hi I'm sanny.. would like to ask some questions..I had a bunny got abscess after his teeth being extract last december.. about 6 months, his jaw is getting bigger n bigger.. I had gone back to the vet and what he said he is not sure what is it.. but he said it might be abscess.. I asked him whether it needed to be surgery again or not.. he just said it will be back and it was useless.. I never give up.. so I keep searching info by googling and found some info.. n I'm back to my another vet and asked her to inject penisiilin with benzathine over 1 month but it doesn't work at all.. everytime she pressed the pus another abscess will occur in other place.. and I found manuka honey would cure the abscess.. but I don't know how to use it.. what I do is just apply it on the wound and give the honey orally.. just now I tried to push out the pus in 3 different places under his jaw but seem hard to be push out all the pus and I just cover it with manuka.. what should I do? Tq

Hello

Unfortunately Dental abscesses in Rabbits are extremely problematic and it is highly likely the further surgery would be needed. But first it would be important to establish the exact extent of the infection and whether there is now infection in the actual jaw bone too (osteomyelitis) If that were to be the case then sadly the prognosis is very poor. Skull Xrays would be needed to assess the extent of infection.

Manuka honey alone is unlikely to be curative even if there is not yet any osteomyelitis. The abscess would need to be surgically removed along with all the necrotic tissue. Or as much of it as possible anyway. Then longterm antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pain relief would also be needed. The choice of which antibiotic/combination of antibiotics to use is best to be based on the culture and sensitivity results from swabs taken from the abscess wall.
