Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Good Vet in/very near Winchester?

Hi guys,

Some of you might know that I go to university in Winch and I've got my bunnies living with me now. They're registered with a good practice in Basingstoke, but I wanted to get them registered at a practice here as well in case I encounter any emergencies, and I can't get home!

(Also, I pick up my rescue bun on Thursday and want to get him neutered and health checked etc in Winchester... I can't take him to Basingstoke to do it because erm... my parents don't know about him yet :lol:)

So anyway, does anyone know of any good vets in Winchester? I've had a google but everything seems pretty outdated!

I don't think there are any rabbit specialists in Winchester, which I know pretty well. I would definitely recommend John Chitty, if you can get there.

Echo what the others have said re John Chitty and Virginia Richardson, but if you want somewhere closer to home just for routine bits I go to Pet Doctors in Chandlers Ford. I see a guy called Michael Hoad who in my experience has been knowledgeable with both buns and piggies.

My nearest emergency vet is actually in Winchester, Vets now, so that is handy in emergencies for you. I've only been once and the vet seemed quite knowledgeable, however I was probably leading the diagnosis as I knew exactly what was wrong from the offset. I think that vet was a locum anyway as he didn't seem to know where anything was!

If you ever need a hand transporting buns to the vets (not sure if you have a car with you at uni) I don't mind helping as I live in Chandlers Ford. I think you probably know who I am by now

Ah thankyou that's really helpful and a really kind offer :) Normally Will is really good at driving me somewhere if I need to get there, but obviously he can't be around all the time.

Yes I know who you are haha, such a small world.

Well Reading to Winchester is a lot further than I am, so if you ever have a bunny emergency just get my number off him or something. As long as I'm not at work I should be able to help :)

Plus from my experience he doesn't talk bunny

He just says things to deliberately wind people up  I'm training him, don't worry :p he came to the rescue with me last week and showed genuine interest in some of them and was asking the lady questions. It's a start!

Lol - he's never taken any interest in mine. Which rescue was that if you don't mind me asking :D

Aha well as a couple we have a mutual understanding... He has football, I have pets  it was Southampton Rabbit Rescue. I'd heard good and bad things but thought I'd go and have a look around. Ended up falling for a bunny who'd only been there a week so he hasn't been neutered yet, but Sue (the owner) knows I'll get it done ASAP. :)

Oh okay - to be honest I didn't think they neutered their bunnies anyway...I tend to stay away from SRR if i'm honest as I don't agree with how Sue runs the place. I have my two fave rescues and I stick with them

A lot of the boys on the website were neutered when I first looked, but I'm not sure about girls. I was going to look at Cottontails as well, but you know what it's like when you fall for a bunny. Just excited to give him a new start. Just for future reference what rescues do you recommend?

Last time SRR came up in convo (the lady that runs the piggy rescue near me knows Sue) I'm almost certain they didn't neuter or vaccinate any of their buns. Whether that's changed or not, I don't know, but I don't agree with her rehoming un-neutered or un-vaccinated bunnies at all. Obviously it's okay when they go to good homes like you but they could be used for breeding/get cancer/get myxi etc etc

I totally know what it's like - I always have to refrain myselves from bunny napping when I visit rescues. There's one bunny I have completely fallen for at one of them, I would jump at the chance to re-home but it's not good timing and I don't have a single female needing a male

The two rescues I support/would adopt from are Reading Rabbit Rescue (I foster for them and have adopted) and The Rabbit Crossing (we were all set to adopt from them, had the homecheck etc but the bond didn't work). They are both a bit further away, but it's well worth the drive. TRC only rehome to a 20 mile radius, which, when I was living in Basingstoke was just caught. Now I am outside it but Helen is familar with me so I would hope if I wanted to adopt from them it wouldn't be an issue :) I used to fundraise for TRC but have stopped for a while whilst we were moving house - I hope to start again soon

ETA: both rescues mentioned above neuter both males and females, vaccinate, homecheck and do all the bonding for you :thumb:

Ah that's useful for future reference. I always think of TRC but with no car it's kind of difficult. Didn't know you used to live in Basingstoke either, that's where I'm originally from obviously.

It's so hard when you really want to rehome a rabbit but have no legit 'reason'
