Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Twitch/jerk u/d good news

Lily is better and has the all clear :thumb: it seems that we caught mites very early and knocked them on the head with prompt and repeated spot on treatment. Thank goodness for that. :D

Original post: I am hoping one of you may be able to shed some light on Lilly's problem. I shall start at the beginning:

I noticed while she was sitting still in the run late on Monday night that she had developed what can only be referred to as a "jerk" of her head. It's like she is about to binky (and she is a VERY binky bunny) but it's not that. If she had a fringe, it would be like she was flicking that back.

Obviously concerned, I gave her a thorough going over and could find nothing. Certainly, she is very happy in herself and has been tearing up the garden, binkying, eating/drinking/pooing/weeing all fine, playing with Willow as usual etc.

I rushed her to the vets anyway on Tuesday morning, suspecting maybe there was something in her ear (and mindful if dreaded EC, although the symptoms do not quite match - there is no tilt, loss of balance etc, just this head flick)

The vet gave her a good MOT (and Willow, who was NOT amused since she had no symptoms of anything!) and thought that she had a lot of ear wax in her right ear. He said that he couldn't be sure, but he thought that there may have been the start of mites in that ear, around the wax. He ruled out EC. Her eye responses were normal and he was not concerned.

Both bunnies were treated for mites (though there were none on Willow and Lilly's other ear was clear) as a precaution, and I thoroughly cleaned the shed/all bedding etc as well.

But I am not sure that is what is causing this head jerk. It is like "rabbit tourettes" for want of a better description (without the swearing)

Can anyone shed any light on it? Like I say, she is fine and her usual self in all other respects. It's like a pre-binky, kind of, without the follow up spring lamb action.

hmm...a little when he flicks his head, but there's no chewing/mouthing/build up to it. Not exactly. I will try and get a video of her doing it.

My suspicion is (and I hope not) that it is something neurological. It really is like a pre binky flick.

I can but hope that it is mites, really, but I cannot see that they would cause the movement I see. I have HUGE doubts that this is the problem but I cannot find another answer.

Dare I ask whether the gorgeous bunny in the video is well?
