Changing vets

Hypothetically...

If you were thinking of leaving your current vet to move to another practice, how would you go about explaining it to the current practice?

The current practice is very good, but there is a better option with more of a personal interest in the rabbit species, and an exotic specialist vet. Can't just leave and not say anything, as have used the current vet for years, know them all really well, respect them a lot and have really appreciated all they have done. It's just that there is a better option for the rabbits. Am needing to explain the whys and wherefores, and say thanks to them, and not make them feel like they are rubbish (coz they aren't by any stretch!).

You don't need to let your current practice know, just register with the new one and they will call the old one up to get your records.

I didn't, I go to the better vet now but if I was desperate I could still go to my old one which is much closer. My cats are still at the old one anyway

Hmm, I can't really do that! I love them all to bits, and they have been wonderful. It would just be rude in these circumstances to say nothing I think. I just need a way to explain it so they know I appreciate all they've done for my bunnies, but the fact I'm leaving will just make it look like I don't appreciate it

You're right, you shouldn't leave without an explanation especially if they have been good to you. I'm sure if you explain to them the reasons why, ie the other vets specialise in rabbits etc, I'm sure they would totally understand. Just be honest with them, and if there was to be an emergency, I'm also sure they have welcome your visit.

When we took our Daisy for her hip, our vet actually gave us the option of an exotic animal vet about an hour away which they highly recommended. We didn't and our own vet did the surgery.

I'm sure they would appreciate it more if you just told them why. At the end of the day, we all, including your vet, just want what's best for our pets. I'm sure they would understand.

I've just done this because I found a rabbit specialist, and the vets I had been using had only seen 1 giant rabbit before. I just told the truth really - I was switching them to a rabbit specialist and it was truly nothing personal. Professionals should understand this reasoning, there are consultants in all branches of healthcare.

I've never said anything! I had a vet once who was a lovely person, but she was really no good with small animals (even though she said she had a 'special interest' in them). Much as I thought she was a nice person, I had no qualms about leaving with no explanation.

Thanks all. cpayne I think a card is a really good idea.

The reason I feel a bit bad about it is that I don't actually have any problems with them at all. I have used them happily for several years, and they have been really good with my rabbits, and referred when they didn't know the answer. It's just that now I'm aware of another vet who I think would offer my rabbits even more than they can. It would be easy if they weren't very good, or had made some huge mistake, but they haven't

It's the exotics thing that is the crux of it, so I will explain that this new vet has an exotics person, and for that reason I'm moving, then give them a thank you card. I'm such a numpty with this kind of thing. I never want to upset anyone

Not wanting to upset anyone is a sign of a decent person, not a numpty.

Could you take the card and mabe a tin of chocs to say 'thank you' and explain re; the exotics specialist?

Lucky you having a specialist. Hope they are really good.

Obviously do what you think best, but I personally think making a big deal of leaving actually has the potential of rubbing it in further! :?

When I left my last vets I sent them a thank you card just saying that I appreciated all their hard work and support over the years but that the time had come for me to move on.

This time it's a bit easier because I am actually moving house so I have an excuse, even though if I was staying here, I would still change practice and follow my current vet to her new practice
