Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mange Mites !!!

This is in relation to guinea pigs - The guinea pig forum is closed atm so I hope you don't mind me posting here :(..

I have 5 piggies, two of which has visable bald, scaley patches which i'm almost 100% sure is mange mites, the other 3 are fine but I obviously want to treat them all.

Is there any cheaper alternative to the Xeno 450 Ivermectin?

I tend to use the Beaphar brand (still Ivermectin, same as Xeno) which is a lot cheaper but you need to use slightly more of it as the Xeno tubes do up to a higher weight limit. P@H don't sell it anymore so get it online here: http://www.pet-supermarket.co.uk/Products/NC2266/beaphar-anti-parasite-spot-on

Thank you, ordered some :) .. Only 2 of my piggies are infected from what's visable to me (both in different cages and have a partner) so how much will I have to give each infected pig? I wanted to treat all 5 really but it only comes with 4 pipettes!

I use easimec on my rabbits (you might need to double check if its ok for guinea pigs, but I think it's ok for small animals in general) with 5 piggies it might work out cheaper for you.

Too late now! Thanks anyway :) I should research more before buying things lol. Hopefully this beaphar will do the job though!

You apply 1 pipette per 750g body weight. Some of my pigs weigh around 900g so I have to use 2 per animal... you will def need to treat all of them as they will all have the mites, just that some have a lower immune system so can't fight them off so well as the ones who aren't showing symptoms  and you will prob need to repeat the dose after 4 weeks just to make sure you have got rid of them all. Maybe order another box?
