Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dog I look after has Kennel Cough- Are my buns at risk??

Gemmapookie

Wise Old Thumper
He hasn't been officially diagnosed as yet but today he has been coughing a lot, sometimes to the point where he retched up white froth :(

If it does turn out to be Kennel Cough, could my buns catch it?? They never have direct contact with the dog, but I see him every day and have full body contact with him as he's such a big soft oaf!

When I got in from work just now I've scrubbed my hands and immediately changed out of all of my clothes before any contact with the buns.

Should I be worried?

Kennel cough is bordetella right? So I think they can catch it. I thought mine had kennel cough awhile back so I was careful about it.

I did a quick search and came up with this site:
http://www.provet.co.uk/health/diseases/bordatella.htm

I would ask your vet to be sure, it does look like the bordatella organism can travel between species, even though it doesn't appear rabbits were named specifically in the article.
I often wondered if Mimzy's chronic nasal problems began after a trip to the vet where a rather casual nurse allowed a dog with some kind of contagious cough near his carrier while we were in the waiting room. :(

Best to be safe. xxxx

Oh dear, I suspected as much :(

Thank you for the info guys. I'll be sure to take extra precautions with the buns and perhaps drop in on my vet for advise x
