  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD threat

In town there was a very freshly killed pigeon and the blood had splerted out, a lorry went directly over it with its wheels, I then had to cross the road and trod exactly on the spot the wheels were after driving over the pigeon. Is there any risk of VHD here? Could the pigeon have trodden in VHD and have had it on its feet before it was killed and therefor by treading where it was I now have it on my shoes?

You need to think whether other people would be worrying about this as much as you are just now.
If they wouldn't then you need to realise that posting things like this will only feed the ocd demon.

What does your pysch say about things like this that make you feel anxious?

I took the babies to the emergency vets tonight as Jims isnt well.
I put the carrier on the floor at the vets and also their blanket as well.
Obviously the carrier and blanket are in the house on the floor.
Is there any chance of vhd?
What if my dressing gown touches it and then I sit on the sofa?

As always minimal risk. Part of my CBT was that you an rarely ever say no risk of something happening. There is a very very small chance and you have to learn to manage the anxiety that this brings.

I hope you get some help soon.

Vets use very strong disinfectant for exactly that reason, otherwise all the animals that came in would catch things! Your bunnies will be fine

this.
Rachy how are things going with your team?
What techniques have they taught you?

Guys I am panicking! Are you sure that there is not a risk?

I have been referred to the center of excellence for on patient treatment but apart from that nothing

It's impossible to say there is no risk.

There is a negligible risk, there always is - same as getting the flu. You can have the flu jab, but there's always that chance you will get a bad cold.

As i know a fair amount about OCD due to my wife, can i ask you the following...

What would you say if i said the chance was about 50/50 of them getting VHD from it? What could you do about it?

You don't appear to be seeking much help from what you tell us, bar being referred, have you chased an appt? Have you called and called ?

What techniques have they taught you when you were seeing a psych to deal with the anxiety?
When you come on here asking about the risk etc it's the reassurance pat of the ocd, the more people who say there is no risk etc to make you feel better the worse the ocd will get.
It's a very had thing to deal with, but it can be done.

If I were you, I would chase this up.

I'm afraid that whatever reassurance people on here try to give you, it makes no difference - in fact it seems to fuel your anxiety so you keep seeking more reassurance......... and so it goes on.

I hope you get the help you need very soon. As I said, I would chase up the referral.

I think it could also help if you understood what's behind it for you, why this particular worry. What is it about VHD? And/or about the rabbit(s)? (This is just rhetorical, I wouldn't expect you to answer on the board, plus i'm not exactly a frequent poster to consider it my business.)
For example if you knew it was partly about some sudden loss of another pet (VHD being sudden, hence the example) and feelings or events surrounding that, something that was over and done with and a separate event, that could help you be more detached and able to think more calmly about infinitesimal risk of a rabbit disease. Also, have you tried meditation? It doesn't have to cost anything; there is free stuff online, and some places have free or very cheap classes, some libraries may have books.
It's a shame the services are being slow.

As I have said many times I am unable to accept local help DUE to my OCD, that is what is holding me back and my psyc team have finally heard me after a long time begging him to refer me. He has now spoken to the funding panel and a specialist who works at the Bethlem who saod to put in the referral as they believe I have a strong case and that I NEED the intensive in patient treatment.
My CPN doesnt bother with me anymore which makes it so hard as I have no support.
I have a follow up appointment in October to find out how the referral is going, he has said it will be a long process and once the referral is in it gets passed to the funding panel who meet once a month to discuss new cases and whether they should get funding for intensive in patient treatment.

To try and answer some of the questions-

Graham, l could not cope with that, I already feel out of control as it is.

I think the intense fear I feel towards them getting VHD is because I am so attached to them, Jimby in particular as he is my sole mate and is always there for me, I need him and he needs me. The fear I feel is due to how devastated I was when I lost Pip, it sent me into a spiral of despair and I just wanted to die, the love I feel for Jims is even stronger!!
