  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hello, can anyone advise me of what I can do? I have to move to Russia for 6 months in 10 days time, I've mailed the details to SOAD but I don't think it's working somehow. What else can I do? I've rung around a few rescue shelters in London but they aren't taking rabbit at the moment, and my vet can't help. :(
Any suggestions??

, gosh that's soon, you must be beside yourself trying to find somewhere

If you are going for just 6 months, have you considered long-term boarding so you can take them back once you're back? My friend runs a boarding place and specialises in long-term boarding with large accommodation (she has had some bunnies for up to 2 years whilst their owners are abroad). It isn't a cheap option, but as you are running out of time it might be worth looking into. My friend's boarding place is: http://www.sussexbunnyboarding.co.uk. She is excellent in all things bunny, so you'd have no worries about her looking after them.

Another option is having them fostered by someone. Are they outdoor or indoor rabbits? If outdoor, could their housing go with them? If someone fostered them, you would still be liable for the vet fees, but fosterers usually provide food and bedding, or take a contribution towards these. Again with this option you could take the rabbits back again afterwards.

I would PM SOAD again depending on how long ago you messaged her.

There is a rescue in Swanley called second chance and they never turn any animal away. If you call John on his mobile I'm sure he will help you. I went up there recently and donated a lot of jewellery for them to raise money as they do such a great job. Could you not rehome them just temporarily though as suggested?

Kerry at Cuddly Critters is full but might be able to help. http://cuddlycrittersrehoming.webs.com/

Thanks for the suggestions :) Yes, things are a little fraught around here at the moment. I really didn't want to advertise on any other site or burden an rescue shelter but it seems I'm going to have to. Still no reply from SOAD. I'm not sure if I did something wrong or maybe they're just too busy. I've emailed a few times, the last was yesterday.

I'll look into cuddly critters and see if they have any advice. They boys are rexs, so sometimes there's a list of people waiting for one to come in I think. Maybe there's a rex re-home website... I'll have a look.

I think I've managed to find foster homes for my 2 needy cats, but not for the rabbits, so I think a permanent home is best for them. I may be gone for 8 months or more, they're only 10 months old and full or mischief and personality, I think they should be part of a loving family.

I'll do what I can to not dump them at a rescue, but it's looking more and more likely to be my only option. They have a chicken coop, a 6ft sq run and 2 small hutches, as well as a sack of food, bowls etc.. etc....now all we need is someone to love them.

How many rabbits do you have? Is it all 3 in the pic? They look soooooo gorgeous.

If u can get them to Wales I would be glad to foster them to you but appreciate that it is rather a long way to transport them and all their stuff ...

Hi there, it's not the 3 in the pic, no, it's 2 rex boys. Maybe I can change my pic at the bottom....

I just called cuddly critters and they're full! Raply from Soad, I think I've mailed someone now who can post the ad.. things are getting tense

Tulsi: Thank you very much for the offer, I might be gone for over 8 months tho! A foster makes no sense really, as I don't know what situation I'll be in if and when I get back. I'm moving everything I own into storage on tuesday and will have no home to come back to. I've managed to get both cats into loving homes with friends that can last longer, but it's a bit more likely that I can take them with me to Glasgow and Australia.

I am actually coming to wales at the weekend with work so I could possibly get them to you, If you still thought you might be interested, tho I wouldn't be able to bring the hutches or run as I'd be on the train. I'll change my sig now so you can take a peep.

Any other ideas at all for places that might have space of people that might be interested would be greatly appreciated. Gumtree's getting closer to a reality :(

Have you tried the Mayhew Animal Home (NW London)? From their website they don't seem to have many buns in atm and I have adopted from them before, they are really good

Essex guinea pig rabbit and rat rescue have space and a possible home! Vaccinations and health check next Sunday. This is a heartbreaking thing to be doing after many many years of rescuing animals, but I hope I'm doing the right thing.
