  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

UPDATE - Bunny eye ulcer - NOT an ulcer - infection or worse :-(

My beautiful little deaf REW minilop bunny 'baby Daisy' (named because she was the 'runt' of the litter and is tiny) has what appears to be an ulcer in her eye - I took her to the vets a couple of weeks ago because of a runny eye and they said she had inflammation in her eye and gave me some eye drops to use for 3-5 days - I administered them for 5 days as directed but she now appears to have an ulcer in the same eye - has anyone any information I can read up on about this condition please??

What makes you think she has an ulcer? I'm not sure I can point you in the direction of any info specifically, but I've had lots of ulcer experience sadly and this has included referrals to an ophthalmic specialist vet. It is easily diagnosed usually by the vet putting fluorescein drops in the eye and the ulcer shows up under uv light. Ulcers can repair very quickly with the right medication as eye cells regenerate very quickly, so it can get better within a week, and if it doesnt, it suggests that some other intervention or change of drops may be necessary.

So as a starting point, antibiotic eye drops often do the trick, accompanied by pain relief as eye ulcers are very painful! I have started with fucithalmic which is one of the normal rabbit eye meds, but if this hasn't worked we have moved onto other drops including ciloxan, and one called exocin from the eye specialist. There are lots of other things that can be tried if it doesn't heal, but usually it will heal on its own with the help of the right eye drops if there isn't an underlying condition.

If you've done the 5 days of treatment and bunny is still poorly, I would suggest taking her back to the vets and seeing what they think. They should be able to diagnose or rule out an ulcer in a normal consultation, although the cause may be a little more tricky to establish. Good luck x xx

Took baby Daisy to the vets this morning - it is not an eye ulcer apparently as the dye didn't show this to be the case - was told it could be either a bad infection or worse - been given fucithalmic cream for 3 days then to return - any advice??

What exactly does it look like?

Does it look like a white/pale disc in the eye? or is it swollen and red on the eyelid? Did your vet mention EC? or myxi?

EC and myxi were not mentioned - it's not a white disc like a cataract either - her eye has a slightly 'circular' misty patch within it - and the red iris is 'blurry' if any of that makes sense x

Has she any other symptom at all? Doe she ever seem' not there' or circles

~The description might suggest the onset of EC BUT it could be a host of other things and I am not a vet (see warning above for all threads in this section).

Where are you? Would you say your own rabbits were very rabbit savvy?

I'm no expert but don't think it's EC - she is a deaf bunny but has shown no other signs like I have known with EC (2 of my gang have had it previously) - there seems to be many new young vets at my practice and my favourite experienced vet was in surgery this morning - frustrating - will book in with Sean for next visit hopefully he will be free - it was suggested it might be pus inside her eye from an infection - she was treated for uveitis about 3 weeks prior
