calcium

hot cross bun

Alpha Buck
My bun has finally been diagnosed with sludge what diet is best for her now at present its a few science selective pellets, dried herbs, fresh herbs and hay

I just looked at that first link, it says watercress is ok, but the RWA latest magazine says watercress is higher in calcium than parsley :? Olly has calcium issues, and i was feeding him watercress as i thought it was ok, but he developed a bladder infection which i believe was due to the high calcium levels in the watercress :?

I am having huge problems with bladder sludge with one of my buns at the minute. I went to a rabbit specialist vet today and he advised I change her diet to no pellets, lots of hay and grass and lettuce leaves as the only fresh food. He did say if she was struggling with no pellets I could try oxbow pellets. Have started the new diet regime tonight and really hoping it will work!

It's so confusing isn't it when all you want to do is the best for them thinking of taking the pellets away too but I have 3 more buns that love their pellets:?

It is really confusing. I've been struggling with her like this since January and all the vets visits and medication are taking its toll on her now
Just really hoping getting rid of the pellets will make a difference cos I know she will really miss having them

Had some good news today - the blood tests show that her kidneys are functioning normally so it is almost certainly a diet issue. She has managed her first day with no pellets and is showing no withdrawal symptoms!!! Have also started treating her urine scald with sudocrem as the vet advised so hoping to see an improvement with that soon!

Are pellets bad? Bo has been on a pellet kick recently and I have been noticing a lot more "heavy" urine. Should I take her to the vet?

There not a natural diet for a rabbit but convenient for us,if you are concerned about bun always take to vets for a check up:thumb:

No, parsley is quite high in calcium too :( it's such a shame, it's all the things Olly likes the most! :(

ANY veg is better than pellets as calcium content is measured 'dry weight' so think of water content added in.

Also try buying low calcium bottelled waters (usually the cheap end)

Please when looking at lists of supposed high calcium veg remember this is DRY weight - nearly all forage is better for a calcium bun than pellets.
