Too Old To Neuter/Bond?

I am considering getting Dylan a friend to bond with but am wondering if its not realistic due to his age. He is four & a half & is presently un neutered.

Is it silly of me to put him through a big operation & attempt a bond with him?
Should I just leave him be as he is or risk it?

Has anyone else had experiences of neutering & bonding older rabbits?

Any help or advice appreciated!

4 and a half is only middle aged, my Charlie is 5 and I wouldn't have any problem with him having a GA and being bonded as long as general health was okay :wave:

He's still quite young really, I'd have no problem getting him neutered as long as he has a thorough vet check first

He'd probably love a companion!

He isn't old at all (many years ago, yes he would have been considered so).

I would advise you to find a good exotics specialist vet and discuss the neutering.

I have had some rescues done who were a lot older than that... one had to have regular anaesthetics up until 11ish. Castration is a much more minor op compared to a spay so i'm sure your boy would be fine. Bonding should be fine too - having a friend is much better than living alone for possibly another 5 years

I wouldn't hesitate to neuter and bond a 4.5 year ok bunny, he's only really the equivalent of about 35 human years so barely middle aged, he could easily have many years left, I'm sure he would live a friend

I don't know about the neutering - all my buns have been done when they were younger, but 4.5 is definitely not too old to bond. I adopted a boy (already neutered) earlier this year. He is over 5 and he has settled really well with his new partner

Short and sweet, so long as Dylan is well enough to be neutered, go for it and then after a few weeks he can be bonded...ideally with a rescue, neutered doe.

He is an EC bunny so I do feel even more cautious because of that.

We had Noodle spayed at age 7 and are working on bonding her with Oddeye ( aged 7.5 ) and Sorrell ( aged 8 )
