  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

loxicom doseage

The maximum dose of the DOG Loxicom is usually 0.4ml/kg/24 hours. In specific individual cases some Rabbit Savvy Vets will prescribe this dose every 12 hours.

So 2ml does seem to be high for a 2kg Rabbit. Maybe the dose given was for the CAT Metacam (which is 0.5mg/ml) and then the DOG Metacam was dispensed in error :?

You need to call the Vet to clarify the situation.

Wow that does sound a lot. Doughnut is on metacam dog 1.5 and she is 1kg and I give her 0.6ml a day, split into three lots. As Jane says I would call the vets. Is it split into two lots? The dosage I've been given is from a specialist. It is also more effective split up instead of one large dose as rabbits metabolic rates is fast so after 12 hours when they are due their next lot the first lot is probably gone or nearly gone from their body.

Yes I thought that too give morning and night bunny owners seem to know best

At the RWAF conference we asked Richard about meloxicam and he said he now uses 0.6-1mg/kg once or twice daily..he said he has heard of some vets going up to 1.5mg/kg without problems but feels a little uncomfortable about that personally.

2ml meloxicam for a 2kg bunny is 1ml per kg. 1ml of loxicom is 1.5mg, which gives a dose rate of 1.5mg/kg. So it is a very high dose but not totally out of proportion with the doses that some vets will use (although many more won't) they feel that the level of pain warrants it. I'd be more concerned because your bunny normally has a much lower dose which suggests that either they haven't realised this is also 1.5mg/ml or is in an awful lot of pain?
