Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Zantac - Expiry?

Hi there,

I'm a bit concerned about Emerson this morning, he hasn't eaten any hay, very sluggish, and just turned away a treat (was fine last night). (I can't believe I called the vet just before this, to book them in for a nail clipping next week...)! I have some Zantac syrup from when Peabody took ill at the end of March. How long does it keep, as if it is still good I will give Emerson some now in the hopes we can get him moving again as I suspect he's gone into stasis!

Does anyone know how long it keeps for?

I rang the vet and they said it should be okay still.

I just gave him a dose and syringed him as much water as he'd have and we'll see if it helps. He definitely isn't lethargic yet, but you can see he's a bit uncomfortable which is why he's not eating or hopping about. Hopefully that little bit of moving around will help things too!

I also have some rabbit recovery, which I might try to tempt him with later.

He probably needs pain relief too

If he has not improved within an hour or so I would take him to be examined by the Vet. Unless you are certain he has not got a full obstruction and/or bloat you could do a lot more harm than good by syringe feeding him.

You dont mention anything about his recent poo output ? Output is just as important as whether he is eating or not

As I said, he probably needs pain relief too

Hope he feels better soon

He's eating again and perked right up!

I had given him 0.25ml of Zantac and some water earlier. I didn't syringe him any food or anything - don't worry! When I said I might try to tempt him with rabbit recovery, I meant to make up a little dish for him to eat if he was interested.

I gave him a bit of time after the Zantac and when I popped up with some herbs to see if he was interested, he in the hay box eating away and pooping. There were a few small ones and mishapen ones and then a lot more typical ones, so I think it's cleared through.

I didn't notice any odd poops (or lack of poops) before this happened, but I think I caught it straight away. He was eating fine all last night, so it must have just been this morning he went off - but yes I do regularly monitor their output! :D

We'll keep an eye on him closely to make sure he's on the mend. They are off to the vet on Tuesday either way, so he'll get a check-up (obviously if he goes off again we'll take him in straight away).
