  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

do your 'older' bunnies have more in depth health checks?

urine testing, bloods etc?

i have been thinking lately that i would like to get bisc and matt checked over more thoroughly if possible. they're 7 now

also, can arthritis be diagnosed from a check up or would it show on xrays?

No I have never had any of my buns blood tested, only one of my chinchillas, as he was so unwell in 2011. Thankfully they came back normal.

Cutie-pie is 7 or 8 and losing a tiny bit of weight but its has never been suggested and I wouldn't as she is soooooooo nervous, she hates the vets.

We never have any of ours tested for anything unless there are specific symptoms or for some reason they need a GA, then we may do pre surgery bloods if the results would make a difference to our decision.

Some arthritis can be diagnosed in a normal check up, sometimes it can need an x-ray

My Flopsy is an 'older' bunny he is 6 years 8 months. He does have Dental disease, Kidney disease and Arthritis in his back end - More in his hind hocks.

He has had about 3 bloods and 3 x-rays already this year and it is surprising how much things can change so quickly. Kidney Disease can't always be found through xray , Flopsy's xray back in May was fine (other than the arthritis) Yet his bloods came back that his Kidney functioning was really quite badly damaged.

I guess if they are healthy, not had any dramatic weight loss then I would say not to worry. But if they have lost a lot of weight, drinking more than usual and weeing more than they should be then an xray and bloods would be a good idea.

Depending on how bad Arthritis is it can be found without xray, JC my vet could tell flopsy has a stiff back end with arthritis in his hind feet without doing an xray.

thanks for the advice. i think i will take them in soon just for a check up. there are a few very very slight things that are making me think that something is going on with bisc. he's fine and happy but i know him and something just seems 'off', even if it is very slightly.

i think i might get the vet to test their movement again and maybe start with a urine sample to test, just to on the safe side.

eta: bisc has dentals every so often and when he does, i get xrays done aswell just because it's something to check. so next time i will get bloods done aswell i think, just whilst he is under sedation anyway. amazingly though, he hasn't had a dental in about a year i think! :thumb:

the vet is very thorough with the check ups anyway so that's good. :thumb:
