Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My Rabbits Recent Amputation

New Kit
My poor bunny recently had his hind leg amputated. He's recovering well with extra care, eating well etc but i am wondering if anyone has any advice they could give in getting the best outcome from this operation. I'm aware that i need to make sure he stays slim but i heard that they should have physio?
What type of physio?
Does anyone have any tips on things i can do with him?
I'll do anything to to ease pressure on his other leg so he can live comfortably. For now he seems be just fine, hopping about but i'm worried about the weight on just the one leg.
I love him to pieces.

Hi

I have had a tripod bun and my main advice is to let him build up his strength as much as possible. Ours had her amputation before we got her and they did not give her enough space so she became weak on that side before we got her and 'twisted'.

If you start to see splay on the front legs or a twist in the spine the him to a vet that can do accupuncture or physio.

Just stroking and having on lap for a good long stroke will help soothe and relax tired muscles.

Also make sure YOU clean his relevant ear for him as he will no longer be able to do it and inner ear infection will follow which can be very very hard to solve once formed.

He will need ear checking and cleaning every other day at least.

Do not stick cotton tips down it - ask vet how to clean it.

When you say build up his strength do you mean to let him hop about? I have been letting him out his inside cage for a bit each day so he can get used to life without the leg but not for too long as he is still healing.

Thank you for being so helpful.

I have a tripod cat. He needs his ear checking and a good daily scratch round that area. He also struggles to wash his bum as he over balances so sort of sits at some very odd angles to get to what needs washing.

We were told to watch his weight because its extra pressure on one limb instead of two.
