Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Arthritis help needed for my older bunny!

New Kit
Hi there,

My rabbit patch has developed arthritis and it is already a bad case. She has deteriorated a lot in the last week and I have no idea how to help her! She can no longer use her back legs properly and can barely stand. She is on a dosage of 2kg of metacam once a day but it doesn't seem to be helping her. Patch is an 8 year old dwarf rabbit and she lives my larger lop milly in a hutch outside. If I can't help heal her, I at least want to make her happier and more comfortable!

She is a lovely little creature and I absolutely adore her so any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Awww bless her! Is your vet certain that it is arthritis? It would be unusual for it to suddenly get bad within a week or so, especially at this time of year. There are a number of other conditions which can cause back leg weakness, most commonly a bug called e.cuniculi which is well known for doing so. Has this been ruled out as a possible cause?

If it definitely is arthritis, then anti-inflammatory medication can help keep her comfortable (2kg dose doesn't sound a lot, even for the tiniest rabbit), and some people have also found that acupuncture can help a lot. One of my cats has acupuncture and she is now off all medication after 3 years on it!

Personally I would be pushing your vet for more information as a sudden weakness of back legs in weather like this sounds more like something like ec than arthritis. Good luck, hope your little one is ok x x
