  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Icky bum!

I just went out to do the girls morning checks and Angelica had a very slightly dirty bottom, it was only a little bit of poop, but it's also a little red. I've checked both of them over for flies/eggs/maggots, and they both look to be clean, as I was terrified it was flystrike. And I've cleaned her bottom up, I also rifled through their litter box to make sure there were no signs of diarrhea. Is there anything else I should do? :?

They were as excited as usual to see me and didn't seem to be anything but their usual selves, Jelly (Angelica) still came out to meet me with wuffs, however I'm not going to go out today so that I can keep an eye on them.

I really can't afford to take them to the vets atm. *worried*

You've done exactly what I would have .. though perhaps change the litter. It might be the heat, or she was a bit stressed. Benji always got a poopy butt when Luna tried to hump him (they're both neutered and luna is a SHE .. dominance issue apparently). At times he was so bad I would have to put him in a bowl of water to clean him. He always looked so miserable with his mucky bum .. same as when he is maulting - he hates to not look his best.

You can get some fly strike spray to spray in their cages and on their bottoms from any good Pet Shop.

It's hutch cleaning day today, so when the sun moves over the house I'm doing the whole lot, so the litter will be done shortly, although I only did it yesterday, I've got a once a week flystrike spray which I put on the other day.

Maybe it's the humping that's causing Jelly's icky bum, Mercedes can get a bit naughty some times, luckily they're booked in for their spay soon :)
