  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye issues

My rabbit was born with a bad eye. I guess this is common in rabbits. My vet was kind and explained it all to me (I forget what it was called.) She had surgery on her eye and has to have ointment and eye drops. Now, there is the possibility that the problem is reoccurring. The worse possibility of this disease is it can lead to blindness of the eye. Anyone else had buns with this problem/

Can you be a bit more specific as to the exact problem with the eye?

Is it the actual eyeball that is damaged ? Or the structure of the surrounding tissue - eg ectropian/entropian ?

I forget what the condition is called. Her eye gets a gray coloring around it and her pupil gets really huge. I was told it is common in rabbits and that there was no guarantee that it would not return after surgery.

It is coming back again, but her vet believes fighting it with ointment and eye drops will help. At first, she fought me on the medication. But, she has been getting them since she was about 6 months old (she will be one year on Thursday,) so she is used to is now. She just sits on my lap and takes it. I cried after I saw her after the first operation. I cannot imagine putting her through that again, but if it has to be done.

What exactly did the operation involve ??

They did an operation on her eye to remove the problem. The whole thing, plus recovery, took about 6 hours. I took her home that night. But, I hated to see my baby in pain. I had to give her pain medication and eye drops. They did show me a book in English explaining the procedure and problem, so I know they were not pulling my leg. I cried when my lab had to get a cyst remove from her eyelid. I hate seeing my babies in pain.
