  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can rabbits get constipated or IBS?

I just wondered everyone's thoughts on this as I think Doughnut does. She was throat rubbing and making noises constantly for four hours. I gave her two lots of metacam which made no difference. After four hours she suddenly did lots of poops everywhere and was instantly better and ready to eat again.

I've noticed that once the throat rubbing stopped it is normally accompanied by lots of poops. It's difficult to understand as she eats lots of hay. Just wondered everyone's thoughts on this.

I've called my specialist today to leave a message on what I've realised is happening to get his thoughts on it, so will probably hear in the week.

Not as far as I know but they can get issues with their cecum not emptying properly. It sounds like thumps_'s Thumper when he had problems. He would be very uncomfortable when it was too full but wasn't emptying, then he'd do loads of poos, some misshaped and then he'd be fine. There is medication to help but I can't remember what it's called.

It may be rantidine or something like that as I know Doughnut initially had that but she also had a gut fungi then and a septic and inflamed throat.

Judy and I pm each other so I've already done that as she's great regarding the digestion system!

Thanks for your reply. I'm thinking it may be that as when she is making the noises she often goes to duck down but then nothing is there.

This sounds like Jimby sometimes, I dont know if it can be clinicly described as IBS but it seems like it.

I will let you know once I've spoken to Mark. It could be that her caecum isn't emptying properly though. I'm hoping because I discovered this I can make her more comfortable. She's fine on and off!
