Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

No bacteria found in culture swab??

Hi all,
We've had trouble with a tear duct infection for months and months now. Already had two molars removed which were thought to be the source of the infection, but the pus just isn't clearing up.

The results of a c&s have come back as no bacteria found though, so vet has said we are just really left to keep cleaning up his eye all the time. This doesn't seem right though. Surely something (other than the damage already caused) is causing the pus?

We've tried baytril and gentacin eye drops. Obviously they won't change the abx as no bacteria found! anyone any ideas what I can do next please?

Thanks

I assume skull radiographs were taken before the molar extractions ?

How long had he been off all abx BEFORE the swabs were taken ?

Yes he did have X-rays and everything seemed normal.

Ah ha. I never thought about the abx. He has been on them continually for weeks and weeks, so no break before the swabs were taken! :?

Yes it's thick white stuff, sometimes a bit stringy, and lots of it especially when you rub.

Why wouldn't the abx be stopping the infection in his ducts if its "worked" in the swab though?
