Hopper Haven Bunnies - bunny 048 Oscar

donnamt

Wise Old Thumper
Oscar is a blue grey dwarf lop buck who is now 10 years old.
He was brought to HH by his owners neighbours when they were asked to look after him while they were on holiday. They were shocked by the dreadful condition they found he and his environment in. His face was covered in huge scabs and his hutch was four inches deep in poo and was falling apart. He could barely hop. They were so distressed that they brought him to HH straight away.

HH were able to remove the scabs which were caused by a tooth root infection welling up through his tear ducts and make him more comfortable immediately. Given antibiotic treatment they had healed within a week. It was a remarkable transformation. It took him longer to learn how to hop properly. He had barely two feet of hutch to live in and no clearance above his head. He had hardly any muscles.

When he was put on the floor he didn't have the strength to turn but just bumped into things. Despite all this he is the most cuddly rabbit you will ever meet - he melts in your arms and soaks up any fuss. He adores having his head stroked and will go into a trance while you rub his face. When his owner came back from holiday he agreed HH could keep him. He claimed to love him and want the best for him. Love is not enough! Rabbits need space and exercise, a companion of their own species and proper feed and health care.

Now Oscar lives permanently on foster (with BB mommy!) where he can get the level of attention he craves. And she finally convinced him that other rabbits can give love too. At first he fought off every doe he was tried with, sinking his teeth in and refusing to let go until his jaws were prised open.

But Sea changed all that. He adored her. After she sadly died in early 2013 he accepted Moon, who is a very sweet lad but Oscar is not as in love as he was. Moon does a great job of keeping Oscars eyes clean.
Oscar will live with the legacy of poor housing -it is a constant struggle to keep his old limbs mobile due to his poor muscle tone.
