  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Need advice - Fur/Ear Mites

Furry-Holic

Alpha Buck
I have noticed a small bald dry patch on one of my buns ears and also what looks like dandruff on his body. From what I've searched on internet I'm pretty sure it's either fur/ear mites. I have a vet appointment for tomorrow but want to make sure I'm mite savvy before I go in :D So here are the questions to all you peeps that have had experience with this:

How do they diagnose it? Should I ask for a skin scraping so they know the exact mite that's causing it or would a physical examination be enough?

How do they usually treat it and how long should treatment be?

Will I need to treat his bunny wife too?

What's the difference between ear and fur mites?

They usually do ivermectin injections or ear drops or there is xeno 450 drops done on back of neck. All are valid treatments i wouldn't bother getting a skin scraping unless treatment doesn't work I think ivermectin is a short course of injections the ear drops are daily and the xeno450 is I think done in three applications (could be wrong its been many years since iv had to use.) Hope this helps x

Hiya. My Smudge had ear mites. His have been stubborn but he's nearly there now.. 2 bottles of Canaural ear drops later (3 drops each ear daily) and he has had 2 x ivermectin injections. Willow has been treated too just in case..

Thats good question, I know there are olds of different mites round but in bunnies I have no idea if they are one and the same... sorry...
