The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Upset tummies?

Hi everyone,

I noticed yesterday morning that my single rabbit Rosie had a good few soft poo's outside of her litter box, the smell was very strong. I cleaned them all up and put her out to graze for the day and when she came in later I held off on the veg in case this caused it but then this morning there were lots more soft poo's again. She is also doing normal poo's as well and her appetite is fine and she is bright in herself . I have been doing lots of grooming with her because she is moulting quite heavily so I thought this could be causing her problems but I dont have any immediate concerns because she is in such good form.

What does worry me is that when I came down this morning Bobby was not himself and refused his pellets and was sitting under the couch which he never does and didnt have any interest in going out in the garden. So I have rang the vet and have booked him in for tomorrow morning. I was keeping an eye on him and noticed when he went back into his dog crate he did lots of soft poo's which smelt very bad just like Rosie's and I am now wondering is it just a coincidence that they both seem to have upset tummies or could they both have the same thing and if so what could it be?I have racked my brains and there has been no change in their diet in the last few days at all. Bobby is eating things like veg and grass but has no interest in his pellets or hay so im also starting to think now could he have problems with his teeth. He is stretched out now in his crate looking very relaxed and content but he still hasnt gone near his pellet bowl. I'm quite worried about him, he has never had health problems before  I hope he is not getting gi stasis. I have some critical care and was wondering should I give this to him to boost his fibre intake before the appointment tomorrow? He has not done any normal poo's today, just really soft shiny ones.

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Can you not get an appointment for them today ?

If the soft poo are uneaten cecotrophs then they will smell very strong. But if they are soft fecal pellets then the smell is of concern and might be indicative of coccidiosis.

I would certainly try to get the appointment with the Vet bought forward to today if I were you.

My vet is not in today, the locum does Thursdays and I have brought my pets to her before and always come away feeling she just doesnt have sufficient small animal knowledge and misdiagnoses so thats why I made it for the morning because i want bobby to see the exotic pet specialist who is just fantastic:? I havent heard of coccidiosis before, how could they have contracted this if it is ? I should prob ring up and book Rosie in too so, I just thought she had not reacted well to veg i had given her as she is still getting used to veg being only 4 months old.

Thanks a mill for the info. Will have a good read of it now. Can it be passed to people who are immuno compromised?

Highly unlikely as the specific type of Coccidia that effects Rabbits (Eimeria) is not zoonotic.

Another type of Coccidia can effect humans (Isospora),especially those who are immuno-compromised

Good hand hygiene is always essential of course.

Hi,

I brought Bobby to the vet and as I suspected it was his teeth, he went under anaesthetic yesterday to have two spurs removed and is doing well, he is eating grass and the odd bit of hay etc and getting critical care to supplement this until he can eat his pellets again.

Rosie is fine, the soft poo's have cleared up and veg has been off the menu for a few days to give her digestion a chance to return to normal.

It's disappointing that Bobby has tooth problems and its just a matter of sitting back now and waiting to see if they will return. Fingers crossed they dont as we dont have insurance for him. Luckily we have a fantastic small animal vet though who we have been going to for a long time and he said he will look after us well if it is a recurring thing and will leave out the cost of consultation fee's and keep the price down as much as possible. :D
