Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

NomNom has lump in groin area - U/D Vet wants me to leave it a while Post 16

Was brushing NomNom yesterday and noticed he had what appears to be a testicle even though he has been castrated??? It's about the size of a big grape and soft and there seems to be a couple of smaller lumps near it? I've booked a double appointment at the vets tonight at 6:40 but I'm terrified. Please someone reassure me it's something and nothing.

Oh and he is eating/drinking/pooing/peeing fine and is a very happy bunny

I did think about that Jane....I hope it's something like that and nothing sinister he is only 3 and in good health so just hoping its treatable. Sat at work all day nervous with belly ache just worrying about it :-(

Is it a hernia? A little bunny who comes and stays with me has a little hernia by his bits. It sounds as if Nom nom has one. Let's hope that it is nothing more sinister than that.

Fingers crossed for Nom nom. xxx

Thanks Guys, I saw my vet yesterday and she made me an app to go back later at 7pm for a second opinion. She says it won't pop back in like a normal hernia but it feels like its attached but she can still move it around a little and it does feel very 'organ like' so she doesn't think its a cyst. She really isn't sure so wants me to see the main vet tonight and if he doesn't know she says I may have to go to a rabbit specialist, I usually use Ashleigh vets in Manchester as I think this is my nearest (unless anyone knows of a nearer place) Anyway will let you know what the vet says later on. Poor NomNom he didn't like being poked and prodded at all :-(

I had a similar sounding lump in the same area with my bridge bunny Roger. He was absolutely fine otherwise, but hernias aren't meant to be just popped back in, as they will only pop back out:roll: Because of the location though, Roger did need his sorting out with emergency surgery as apparently if it ruptured it could have strangulated his bowel and killed him.

Really don't mean to scare you, but your vets with the best will in the world don't seem very clued up, and IF it is a hernia, then POTENTIALLY it could become fatal if left untreated. Just thought I'd better let you know in case your vets continue to hang about on it.

Hope you get it sorted it soon.

Thanks RogerRabbit, they are very good at my vets although not exotic specialists so if they still are unsure after todays appointment I will be booking him in at Ashleigh vets ASAP. She did say if it is a hernia then it is too big to be left so they would be looking to operate. She also said if they were at all unsure on how to proceed then they will contact Ashleigh and get him booked in there ASAP as she was concerned like you said with a big hernia being left. The thing is I don't know how long it has been there it could have been there a year for all I know as he is really fluffy and has thick fur so I only noticed it as I was grooming him because he's moulting quite a lot  Anyway I will let you all know what the vet says later on.

My bunny was a severely disabled house bunny, and it suddenly appeared overnight and I noticed it in the morning. Took him to my vets in the afternoon, as wasn't sure if it was an abscess or some kind of infection causing the swelling, but Simon (rabbit specialist) admitted him straight away and operated the next day, so I guess he had it in total for less than 48hrs.

Best of luck for NomNom. My bunny Skye (now at the Bridge) had a hernia over her spay scar area but it was very complicated and her bladder was involved, was very scary. She was in hospital for a week as her gut stopped after the surgery and she was very poorly

Sending vibes for a positive outcome xx

Thank you....keeping fingers and paws crossed that its nothing serious. NomNom says he hopes so too and is not looking forward to going to the vets again later and always misses his boyfriend lots when he visits the vets but he looks forward to when we get home and he gets a piece of juicy apple for being good

Both vets suspect it is a testicle. I am ringing the vet today who castrated him to make sure they took out both testicles and if they couldn't find one for some reason. My dad took him and picked him up that day so wondering if something didn't get passed across for some reason or there was some kind of communication error. Anyway my dad knows the vet who did it so he is going to get him to check the records. If we have no luck then my vet is going to open him up and take a look. He said either that or send me somewhere for an ultrasound which of course is less invasive but cannot guarantee to give me a 100% answer what it is. If the vet gives me the choice of opening him up or an ultrasound what would people choose?

I'd definitively choose ultrasound. We all know that anesthesia in rabbits is far more risky than in dogs and cats... and out of my 8 cats, through all years, I've lost two due to pre- or after- anesthesia complications. I would not risk a bunny being put under just to see. I would recommend ultrasound and if they still cannot determine what it is and the only option is surgery, then that's what you have to do. Just my opinion.

Me and my bunny are keeping our paws crossed for your NomNom.

*please don't understand me wrong, I'm not saying half of the rabbits going under anesthesia die, I probably just had such a bad luck with my cats, but I just don't find it right to put him under a. not knowing what's going on in him

Thanks Kyou, I've decided I will choose the ultrasound first....like you say it's not worth the risk. My vet seems inclined to leave the lump as its not causing any problems and it doesn't seem painful for him but says I will need to check it twice a day for it getting bigger/hot/tender etc but I just don't want to risk it plus I have 7 rabbits and I'm sure Nomnom would not appreciate messing about with him everyday. I still don't know what the vet doing the castration has said about the op so I will probably choose my next step based on that.

So my vet has spoken with the vet who castrated him and he said def no complications during surgery...nothing on the notes etc it was a normal procedure but obviously he cannot remember as it was over 2 years ago. Anyway because we do not know how long it has been there...could even be years....he wants me to leave it a while and see if it gets any bigger. What are peoples thoughts on this? I have been checking it each day and it is the same size. I don't know whether to phone Ashleigh vets in Manchester and ask their advice? What do you guys think?
