  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poorly bunny, advice needed please

Yesterday my mini lop wasn't himself at all, he stopped eating, drinking and pooing. He then started with bad diarrhoea. Took him to the vet last night and she gave him painkillers, antibiotics, fluids and sent us home with a sachet of powder to mix with water and syringe into his mouth. Bunny is now eating hay, drinking and starting to poo. At first he was more than willing to have the syringe, and has done at 2 hour intervals since 1am, but now he is reluctant. I have to go to work this afternoon but my partner is struggling to syringe him. The vet didnt give us much of a clue as to how long he needs to have this mixture, so does anyone have any ideas? I really cannot afford to have time off work to do it myself.

If he has started to eat for himself and he has some normal fecal output then it is not necessary to continue the syringe feeds. It is important to make sure that he has a good water intake though. Also do make sure that he is able to keep cool in this extremely hot weather

I am sure that you have already done so, but making sure his rear end is clean and his mouth/chin/chest are not soiled from the feeds is essential. Flystrike is a real risk, moreso to an unwell/soiled Rabbit

I hope he is now well on the way to a full recovery.

Hi and welcome.

You have had first rate advice from JacksJane (as always).

I just wanted to say that my buns enjoy the recovery food once they start eating by themselves so I give them some in a little dish at regular intervals so they can help themselves - clear it away if they don't eat it after a short while. It's easy to eat and provides some extra liquid too which is important as Jane said.

Of course members are always apply to help but don't forget you can always call your vet to ask any further questions, report on progress , query recovery or medication etc or anything else that may arise. I know I have often done it. Sometimes one of the nurses has been able to answer my question and sometimes the vet has called me back.

Hope bun continues to do well.

Thanks for the advice everyone, called the vet who was happy with his progress and told us to stop the recovery fluid. He is now 90% himself, just a little sluggish but he is eating, drinking and pooing normally :)
