  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Does 2 ml once a day of Baytril sound about right for a 2.39 kg rabbit.

I was prescribed this tonight but it seems excessive?

What strength baytril and by what method (oral/injection), it comes in different strengths!

On face value it doesn't seem too much to me but it depends on exactly what you've been given.

Ok so the baytril oral has 25mg/ml which means that 2ml has 50mg.

My vet prescribes 20 mg/kg daily injected which is the top end of the dose range - but she says in her experience it's only worth giving baytril at high doses. So for a 2.39kg bunny, this makes a dose rate of 20.1mg/kg daily (50/2.39) - which is about right. The small amount over will be just due to rounding and the absorption is higher through injection than oral so I wouldn't worry about that personally.

It's at the higher end of the dose range, but baytril works on peak concentration rather than ongoing amount in system throughout the day, so that sounds fine to me and makes a change to have a vet who prescribes it at aggressive doses rather than at the ones the data sheet suggests!
