  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Conjunctivitis? Very painful.

Rupert is a Californian so has beautiful red eyes. He's currently got very sore eyes, the white bit is creamy and pink. I'm terrified it's cherry eye but his eyes don't seem to be bulging. I took him to the vet on Monday and the vet diagnosed conjunctivitis. When I mentioned my fear of cherry eye the vet didn't seem to know what I meant. How do I know which is which please?
Since then Rupert's eyes are clearly now very painful. They're not weeping, but they seem painful. Last night just before bed he was really shaking. He does this when he's in pain. I was that close to calling out the emergency et but he then ate a bit of plantain but not much, compared to his usual eat everything in sight approach. He then sat in his litter tray and shook, I gave him a dose of metacam and after 1/2 hour or so he ate a little more. I went to bed really scared.
This morning he was quite bouncy waiting for his treats but is quite quiet again though calm.
Clearly the metacam helped.
Please advise what eye cream is best for Rupert and when it should start to help him. I'll take him back to the vets, should I ask for anything else? When will he start feeling better?
He's pooing well and eating far less than usual though last night the veggie trays were only nibbled and this ,morning were empty!
