  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sudocrem - swift response would be greatly appreciated

Wise Old Thumper
Hi, Thumper had a scab on her neck and fur loss caused by an injection. It didn't bother her and looked clean so I didn't take her back to the vet as no need.

However, it appears the scab has fallen off and it's oozing a little blood so maybe she's caught it or caught it while washing. As it's oozing and flies are attracted to blood, can I put a bit of Sudocrem on it? Or just vaseline? Anything else that I'm likely to have knocking about in my human first aid box?

Many thanks :)

Personally I would not put either sudocrem of vaseline on it.

I would make sure there is no sign of infection and take additional precautions re preventing flies getting to the Rabbits- eg fly netting/fly strips/citronella etc

Thank you for your fast response Jane :thumb:

Okay, I will leave it but check it thoroughly and regularly to ensure no flies.

Perhaps you can take in the buns until it's better? Mine had something like that but went fine without any issues. I suppose cream will slow down the healing.

Thank you for your suggestion but that's not really an option as it's far too warm for them in the house in this sudden heat we're having.

I check the area several times a day and thus far it looks to be healing well and the flies have left her be, which is great. The scab came back after falling off but has now fallen off again and what's left is a really teeny scab, the size of a needle ... So just waiting for the fur to grow back really as all is fab :thumb: ... tick, tock ... tick, tock
