  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Respiration difficulties - "attacks" similar to asthma or allergic reaction

UsagiYojimbo

Alpha Buck
Pretty sure it is hay fever related as when he goes outside or I bring in fresh grass he has respiration difficulties whereby he tilts his head vertically and opens his mouth and pants rapidly.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He does NOT have the following:

Heart disease
pneumonia
snuffles
any kind of infection
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It could be an allergy or emphysema

He improves when having doses or Piriton (antihistamine)

We are going to start him on a bronchodilator either through an inhaler or syringe syrup.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronchodilator

What I would like advise on is:

1.What are the differences between inhalers and that device some people are using on here that converts liquid to gas?
2.What specific drugs are available out there for bunnies
3. Anyone else had respiratory issues relating to allergies OR emphysema?

Any advice greatly appreciated

x

EDIT: is there any kind of oxygen mask/machine I can buy for home usage?

When I've had a nebuliser for my asthma its liquid form they put in and it goes straight to the lungs my inhaler I just have to use when needed , not sure how it works for bunnys :/

What drugs do those of you who have used these put in them? i.e. are they anti biotics, bronchodilators or something else?

What are the drugs for and what are they called?
