  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stemetil Question - Advice needed

Anybody who has used this in their rabbit, can you tell me if it made them extremely drowsy?

Cleo has been on it since yesterday lunch time. She seemed drowsy in the evening but still ate well. She has eaten overnight and first thing this morning but since then she hasn't really eaten (very unlike her) and she seems so sleepy and dozy. Is this normal for the drug? I'm questioning whether to continue as she's already lost enough weight, she can't have her appetite reduce so drastically.
I'll be calling the vet this afternoon (they are closed at the moment for lunch)

Sorry I have no experience with using it for a rabbit so just bumping this for you but hopefully the vet will be able to help too. I'm taking it myself at the moment though and one of the side effects for humans is drowsiness so it's likely this could be the case for Cleo too - is she on any other meds?

She's on metacam and just finished a 6 weeks course of fenbendazole. She has a severe head tilt.
I've spoken to the vets and they think its likely that is it causing her to be sleepy so to cut her dose down and only give her it twice a day.
She's still lively enough when being held :) ate a good syringe feed, went crazy for her yummy meds and has had some greens!

I have used it both in Rabbits and for myself (prescribed by a GP of course!!)

It can be very sedating. In fact it completely floored me !!

It seems to have completely floored (even more than she already is!) poor Cleo too! Although she has the severe tilt her appetite has always remained excellent so it was concerning to see she had barely bothered with her mushy pellets which she normally eats all of and licks the plate clean while managing to get herself quite upright to do so.

Does the sedating effect wear off once when she has been on it a little while? If she remains so dozy I can't see how it's going to help her? How long until you see a benefit from the drug if it is to help her regain her balance and hopefully her mobility?

It does seem likely that its the stemetil causing her drowsiness. She has eaten better this afternoon.
