  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Buster just choked on new pellets!

Oh my goodness I am all in a spin, so scary to see. I am (was) in the process of changing him from the vetcare urinary tract pellets to the oxbow essentials bunny basics T pellets. He needs to be on a low calcium pellet but the vet doesn't want him on one with diuretic properties as he has a big problem with drinking too much and incontinence.

Anyway I put down a portion of both pellets and luckily I was next to him when it happened. I only knew something was wrong as his third eyelids were covering half his eyes and then he became really restless and running away. His nose and mouth were dripping all this fluid out. I tried to grab him to do something (no idea what I was going to do!) but he wouldn't let me! Then his third eyelids went down and he was still running away after a couple of minutes so I knew he was ok. Vet appointment at 10.15. Don't think I want to give him the new pellets anymore as they are really tiny compared to his old ones. Although he went straight back to them when he was feeling better, I took them away!

Glad you've got a vet app, when parsley choked I thought he was going to die.
There's goings sticky at the top of this health section that explains what you can do when a choke happens.

Parsley had a weeks worth of antibiotics, and metacam to reduce inflamation and pain.
Hope you're ok xxx

My vet didn't give anything although I asked about antibiotics. He said his chest sounded clear and his mouth looked ok, although his teeth are deteriorating already, despite only having a dental a few weeks ago. Looks like I have a dental bun on my hands. He is a lop with a tiny head so I suppose it was always inevitable.

I've emailed the specialist vet we've been seeing and mentioned it so I'm hoping he will call me later today. I only took him to my local vet as I didn't want to stress him with a long journey.

Buster seems absolutely fine now, happy as larry pottering around and eating plenty :)

it's the risk of pneumonia that the antibiotics help with.
It's a good idea to get a course as a preventative measure.
