Urgent Vibes Please U/D Post 12

Cari

Warren Veteran
Woken up to a different rabbit, she's digging the carpet and doesn't seem herself then when I touch her she squeaks and starts tooth grinding. She let me hold her and was tooth grinding. Think there's something wrong. Dental maybe I don't know.

Had a cuddle then took her in, she just lay in my arms, she hates cuddles. Squeaked and grunted at the vets and wouldn't come out of the carrier.

She's lost 300g, god how did I not notice? The vet says she looks thin. Apparently teeth are so bad at the back on the right side that the top teeth are completely overgrown and her bottom teeth just aren't there. Spurs on her left side too. Advised to have them removed but I declined as she's lasted so long without a dental, 8 months, and they said it would be every 6 weeks to 2 months so I'm proud of her. She asked if she had a good quality of life? And why I'd brought her in on she was still eating, but then acknowledged I'd noticed early signs she was in pain (she made it pretty obvious). I'm so worried, and she's all alone as Stephen was being uncooperative and I couldn't get him in the carrier and didn't have time to mess about.

I feel awful and sick. My poor baby. She's been losing weight and getting sick and I didn't notice.

Sending lots of vibes your way for Eleanor.

I hope everything goes well and that after the dental she can gain the weight she's lost.

Oh thank God. She's ok. They've just finished the operation and she's coming around now, the nurse said she's ok and is in a little basket so they can watch her wake up and ensure she's ok. Can't go and get her until 16.45, said the vet wants to have a word before I take her home. Not sure what about, maybe tell me off. :( deserve it.

My beautiful little Ellie. I hope she's alright there on her own.

Collected her from the vets and she's home.

Apparently the lump on her jaw that I was told wasn't an abcess, is an abcess and she has opened it from the outside to drain a large amount of pus. She's filed her teeth down really short and cut the spurs off. We've got a two week course of Baytril for the abcess to kill off any nasties left and got to go back in two days for a follow up.

I now have one very grumpy and annoyed rabbit, who isn't eating or drinking yet. The vet doesn't think the prospect is long term dentals and we should consider her quality of life before 'extending it'. :( I think my little girl is happy and bouncy, loving her husbun and doesn't seem to suffer with her teeth eating hay and other foods normally right up until this morning. I'm upset by what's been said, and if I thought the operation to remove all her teeth was the right thing to do I'd refer her to a specialist but I don't think it is at the moment.

My poor beautiful girl.

Aww poor bun :( glad she is home. I'd be upset if the vet had said that to me.. after all you see her everyday and know her better than anyone else. Hope she feels better soon!

:( fight for her all you can, you'll know when it's time and as long as she comes round well from this I don't think it is time yet

To be honest I feel that the vet is being unfair.
dental bunnies can be happy and healthy if looked after right which you do.
She managed 8months without a dental!

Fight this abcess look into getting manuka honey pm Kermit on here she knows how to use it and what grade is best.

its not her time.
She has a cracking quality of life, you brought her in before she went into bloody stasis!
You noticed the tiniest signs and listened to your gut!
Keep doing what your doubt Cari and has she had xrays to see about Any tooth root problems?
She may need metacam fir a bit to help her get over this bump in the road xxxxx

Everything I wanted to say! I second this a million times xx Cari you will know, especially more so being in your job you must have a gut instinct you trust when caring. You will know when enough is enough. Don't be bullied into a decision you would regret. I think you have done a brilliant job with her so far. Don't give up on her yet :D

Thanks everyone. She's not even 2 yet, I'm not giving up on her. She's a fiesty little madam with too much bounce and life in her to even consider her not being here.

I'll ask about manuka honey, I know we use it at work for patients so I know a bit about it, thank you :) she had X rays before I took her on and the outcome was a referral to be seen by a specialist, who said he thinks that her best bet would be a huge operation to remove all of her back teeth and do whatever it is to stop them regrowing. He thinks she'll manage to eat well with no back teeth but it's such a large operation I'm not prepared to do it yet. So I'm not sure about tooth root problems, they've never actually made it completely clear to me what is actually wrong with them, just that they are 'bad'.

When we go back on Wednesday morning I can ask for further Metacam if I think she needs it. She's in such a state she's covered in wee stains, don't know what happened there but I've left her for now, don't want to stress her anymore.

She's drank loads which makes me wonder if she hasn't had anything since I dropped her off and she's eating spinach, not interested in pellets yet though and she's lunging at Stephen and making a really sad distressed sound. She's so stressed that at the moment I don't want to take her back for the check up, she won't let me anywhere near her.
