Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit with hayfever?

Kavanne

Saph started sneezing two weeks ago and has been on baytril for 1 week, then septrin for 1 week. She is still sneezing occasionally and the vet wondered whether it could be hayfever? Is there anything we can do about it? Can rabbits take antihistamines at all?

Not really, although some are sensitive to dust. It sounds much more like snuffles and your vet isn't prescribing long enough courses of antibiotics - can you get a referral to a rabbit-savvy vet or even better a specialist? Snuffles isn't something to give up on after 2 weeks.

She is definitely rabbit savvy, don't worry.

The thing is saph is not making any er.., snot? And she only sneezes 2 or 3 times a day. Is that how snuffles can start?

You definitely need longer on the meds. It can be a long hard slog. Vince has been on baytril for months and we are only just ( in the last six weeks) seeing progress. He occassionally has discharge but most just sneezing. It has been a multifacitated approach - occassional tear duct flush ( where the problem is) with daily metacam, tiacil and baytril is working for us.
Vince has to have dust free hay and even a new handful in his tray can set him off. As Nessar said dust aggrevates snuffle buns more than anything. We have also replaced vet bed with lino in his indoor cage too. We have found steam therapy helps too.

I would definitely get on top of this before it gets to the discharge stage. Good luck x

My bunny violet is like this she's had every test possible even had X-rays and biopsys done and she still sneezes occasionally , she's allergic to certain hays so I try and stick to dust free hay and she's also ok with one I buy from ebay , she has childrens liquid piriton :)

Yep it can start that way. My Barney has never had snot come out of his nose, and he has been a snufflebun for about 2 and a half years. He does often get slightly damp nostrils though. But yes, just because they aren't sneezing out snot doesn't mean it is not snuffles. It may also be that the mucus/pus is very thick, so that although he is trying to sneeze it out he can't. Metacam (reduces inflammation), bisolvon (thins mucus) and a nebuliser (steam) can help with that.

Is she an indoor or outdoor bun?

Snuffles is a complex illness and writing it off as 'hay fever' after two weeks just because it isn't responding to abx quick enough isn't really the way to go... if left untreated it can cause permanent scarring and even death. I would however reduce the amount of dust in his environment, as dust irritates the airways and can make the sneezing worse.

I don't know because there's no discharge from her eyes and they put dye in to check her tear ducts and it was all fine?

She's an indoor bun

You don't always get discharge from the eyes, either. You don't always get all the symptoms, especially at the start. My Barney didn't sneeze at all for a few months after he had it! Annabella sneezed but had no other symptoms. Hopefully for your bunny's sake, it will stay mild.

If she is indoors then you need to make sure irritants are kept at a minimum, so hoover lots to reduce dust, don't use aerosol anything, don't use candles (especially not scented), olbas oil/oil burners, harsh chemical sprays etc. Stress needs to be kept to a minimum as well.

It is good she is indoors, as you will see/hear her sneezing more often - often it is not known how much they are sneezing when they are outdoors. Both Barney and Annabella would sneeze most between 1am and 4am, when I was most likely to miss it- thankfully they were in my bedroom so sometimes I was still awake and others the bad sneezing fits from Barney would wake me.

Does she clean her face after sneezing?

I'm not saying it is 100% snuffles, after all I am not a vet, I am just saying that snuffles is extremely common and takes way more than 2 weeks to treat, and 2 weeks of antibiotics is nowhere near enough before writing it off as something else untreatable. Perhaps it is not pasturella and is another bacteria that causes snuffles, hence some different symptoms, or perhaps it is just mild atm.

Make sure you go armed with info about snuffles and what you think she needs. Do some research on snuffles beforehand. Write down everything you need to tell/ask the vet so that you don't forget when you're in there.

Well, we've got saph on septrin for 3 weeks now. She needs so much of it the vet didn't have enough in stock.
Oops! The perils of big buns.

She's taking it pretty well, poor thing.
