Rabbit Savvy Vet in Hampshire?

nessar

Warren Veteran
I am moving to Cosham in Hampshire and it is vital that I have a rabbit savvy vet because of Barney's gut problems, so if you have one, please let me know!

Many thanks from myself and the bunnies!

I use Michael Hoad in Pet Doctors, Chandlers Ford. Not sure how far you are, but he is good. Not specifically a rabbit specialist but he is open to suggestions and willing to work with you and try new things in terms of treatment.

That's a little closer but too far for emergencies, as I don't drive. I will bear him in mind, thanks.

Thanks Jane, it's useful to know there is a specialist in the area if I need them. It would take a couple of hours to get there though, so I couldn't use him as a regular vet.

John is my vet - can recommend him!

Vaccinations and simple things I go to the one down the road.
But if one of mine was poorly I wouldn't take them anywhere else now.

It's worth the travel when there is something important to be done!

Yes, I wouldn't mind travelling occasionally. In fact I plan on travelling back to my current vet for the time being until I find a vet I trust. I'm wary because of the fact that he saw 5 vets before my current one, and none could tell me what was wrong with him or give me any advice other than to put him in for a dental or to feed him more pellet food. I did feed him lots of pellets and other high calorie food, as advised, which after he was diagnosed it was revealed was actually aggravating the problem - if I had carried on following my previous vet's advice Barney would be dead by now.

But the thing is, Barney needs to go to the vets every month normally, sometimes every week, and with working full-time and not being able to go after work (I finish at 8pm) it is going to be really difficult if the vet is far away. It will also be really difficult to drop off and pick up for procedures in the week. I also need a nearby vet I can trust for emergencies - I haven't had one yet but with gut problems it is a risk.

I think you have the right idea. Fortunately he's only about 35 mins from me, so I am able to go to him for everything.

Ask Rhianna who she uses, she's over that way isn't she?

Did you used to see him when he and Kate were at Strathmore?

No I didn't. I went to the Hawk Conservancy place a couple of times if it was a Saturday, but normally took Hopscotch straight to his house in the mornings before work and left him with John for the day, then picked him up again after work. They were loooong days, but would do it all again if I had to!

I think I'm going to take him to John for his vaccination - even though it's a long way to go, it's half the price of my local vet (they charge a ridiculous amount, even the vet nurse said so - who in fact has John as her rabbits vet as she lives up that way!) and we haven't seen John since about November now so I'm sure they'd like to see each other ;)

My vet isn't particularly rabbit savvy but I stay with him because it is a very small practice and he and his colleague do all the out of hours cover themselves so I don't have to drive far and I know who I will be seeing in an emergency.

With my last vet the OOH was quite a way away and I ended up in their car park sobbing my heart out after having had Pumpkin put to sleep. I didn't know the surgery or any of the staff and found the vet totally unempathic.

My vet will research something if he is unsure and he is very enthusiastic about this forum. He listens to me and the staff there know that if I say my bun needs to be seen now - I mean it, and they always fit me in. He also allows me to do as much as possible for my buns myself and teaches me what he can, knowing that I have a lot of bunnies.

He comes to me to vaccinate too - which is a huge bonus as I have nine buns and a very small car:)

At the moment I am working very few hours so I would be happy to give meds/syringe feed any local poorly bunnies if their Mummies or Daddies have to work. I do charge - which sounds awful - but I am in a lot of debt and struggling to find work I can do because of my physical problems with my neck/arm/shoulder.

Would be so much simpler if I could drive :(

know what you mean there. our vets is 40mins each way and we have to get a taxi there and back. luckily we have a great taxi driver who takes us everytime and knocks down the price for us and waits aslong as we need aswell. really lucky. :D

That must cost you a fortune  It costs me about £13 each way if I get a taxi to my current vets, which is about 5 minutes drive! I tend to get the bus instead which is about £3.60 each way. But obviously when I move to Cosham that's not going to be an option :?
