  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Head shaking and scratching ears

New Kit
My OH has noticed that the buns were shaking their head a little yesterday and scratching their ears a bit. They only seemed to do it in their crate despite cleaning it out. Could this be ear mites or an infection? Is it worth taking them to the vets for a check up? They are due to go on the 11th June anyway but that is too far away and if it is mites I don't want it getting worse!

I personally would take them to the vet now. One of mine started with head shaking and ear scratching and is now being treated for a severe middle ear infection after being misdiagnosed with ear mites which, as well as being traumatic is very expensive. The sooner it is properly diagnosed the better.
If your vet suspects mites make sure they take a sample to confirm this as just checking with an octoscope is not always enough.
Really hope it's nothing too bad

Thanks for the quick reply.

They have been booked in for 11:20. I am at work so the OH is taking them. Fingers crossed they are ok. Hopefully this vet will be able to sex them as well as the other vet couldnt tell what the brown one was!

The vet has given us Xeno 50 to apply. 3 tubes for the black rabbit and 2 for the brown (still no names as now this vet reckons they are BOTH girls!) She checked ears but couldnt see anything
