Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Early pasteurella symptoms

Hello all,a neighbour has just bought a 3 month old rabbit from PAH and im wondering if he is showing early signs of pasteurella. He sneezes occasionally and had a tiny amount of discharge from his left eye earlier today. She said hes active and eats well.I havent yet voiced my concerns to her but should he be seeing the vet before next week when shes taking him for a check up?

I rehomed a P@H bunny a couple of years agp who was advertised as having allergies. I paid for a swab to be done and the culture showed a bacterial infection, probably due to poor housekeeping. With the right antibiotics it cleared up. I would recommend she has this done (it cost me £50) and if he is ill she can make a complain to P@H and asked them to cover the vet costs.

Thanks for your post i will talk to her tomorrow.I wasnt quite sure how to tackle this as hes not my bun but i felt it important to encourage her to act sooner rather than later if it might be pasteurella-even in very early stages.

Personally, I would get bun to the vets sooner rather than later - although they won't be able to do much bar put her on a course of baytril and suggest further actions, pasteurella (snuffles) is ALWAYS best caught earlier rather than later.

She took him to the vet today and it IS snuffles. He has started on a course of Baytril to begin with, with a treatment plan if that doesnt help.
