Sweet Pea is an English marked Angora.
She came to HH in August 2007 in an appalling state, matted to three times her normal size. Her face was tied to her chest and she couldn't hop properly as her legs were strapped to her sides by the tangled fur. Her bottom was a filthy infected mess, the tissue raw and necrotic.
It is amazing that she did not have fly strike, although she looks as if she did have it at some stage judging from the abnormal structure of her bottom. Pieces of hay in her coat had pierced her skin like splinters and some of these wounds were infected. It was difficult to even begin to remove the matts as they were so dense the scissors wouldn't go into them. It took about eight hours over two days to free her.
She still gets sore underneath because her bottom is misshaped. She is always shaved now in the warmer months and then we keep her groomed and trimmed over the winter.
It is so irresponsible that people breed these poor rabbits who can not even begin to look after themselves. It is even worse than pet shops who sell these creatures to people who have no clue how to help them. Brushing them is completely inadequate as they need shaving or combing which has to be done with great care by someone familiar with a rabbits anatomy and who is capable of handling the rabbit without it struggling. Sweet Pea lives with Mint, Fidget and Spirit aka “The Hairy Mob”. She was born in 2006.
