  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Coming off of Metacam

Woody is currently on 0.35ml a day after his castration. Because he is nearly 5 he took longer to recover from the op that a youngster. He had the op 16 days ago.

He was seen a week ago and told to continue the metacam for longer because his scrotum was inflammed.

They have dramatically gone down in size - should I now stop the metacam? He had an appointment tomorrow but I cancelled it because the stress puts him back 5 steps. The appointment tomorrow wasn't necessary I was told by the vet, it was the 3rd check post-op.

So, the metacam. Should I reduce it or just cut it out? Or should I keep it up and arrange an appointment for next week?

I'd just keep it up. It could be sore still and I wouldn't want to risk it starting to hurt and setting him back a step. Being on that low of a dose for an extra week will do him no harm at all :)

Great :D I will do that, arrange a final check with vet next week then hopefully he can come off it.

can you phone your vets and speak to them regarding this, and see f they think keeping it up until next week is ok
