Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam dosage too high

HS

Wise Old Thumper
Ok, don't know what to think about this.
Salt was prescribed metacam for arthritis (he was weeing on his back leg - not able to move it out of the way) and was on 0.6ml of cat metacam.
I ordered a repeat prescription and went to pick it up and it was dispensed in a brown bottle and labelled metacam, dosage on the label was the same, so I gave him the same.
I've almost run out so rang to get another prescription. The vet phoned me back and apologised and said that they'd actually given me dog metacam last time. So Salt has been having 0.6ml of dog metacam a day. I put it on his pellets rather than syringing it directly.
I was a bit shell shocked during the phone call, so didn't say anything, but I'm pretty upset about it now.
Salt is 9 years old, a nethie and weighs about 1.2 kilos. He's had the dog metacam for about 3 weeks now.
What kind of damage could this have done him, and what should I say to the vets?

Hiya  I'm not sure about the dose, as my vet uses the measurements on the syringe that comes in the box ie. The measurements are in kg. But I do know that cat metacam generally isn't strong enough for buns, as their metabolism is so high - dog metacam is the norm, I believe. And a bunny can have a lot more metacam than a dog of the same weight. So I don't think you need to worry too much. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me!

0.6ml of Dog Metacam equates to 0.9 MG of the active ingredient (Meloxicam)

The dose range can be anything from 0.3mg/kg/24hrs up to 0.6mg/kg/12 hours ( in ML this is 0.2ml/kg/24hrs up to 0.9ml/kg/12 hours- 0.1ML of DOG Metacam = 0.15MG

Salt has NOT been overdosed :)

Thanks everyone, that's brilliant. I've only just changes vets and don't feel hugely confident in them right now. At least they rang to let me know.
Salt's fine in himself anyway.
